I visited the museum on my first day in the city, and it set up a great picture of the place I was visiting. This museum has both ancient and modern exhibits (mummies!) and plenty to read in English. Easily finished in half a day, and there are many local food shops around the corner for lunch. Free admission.

The history of the mummies and in particular "Loulan Beauty" is amazing and very interesting. Also enjoyed the exhibition of the minor ethic groups, this is very well presented with displays of daily life. There is some beautiful porcelain plates on display. I had an excellent guide and found this extremely beneficial as she expanded on the short English headings and made the whole visit more interesting. Really enjoyed this museum and would recommended

Excellent display of diversified ethnic region and varied cultural background. I have always looked forward to visiting the great west of China since I was young, majorly attracted by the pluralised culture in this region, this museum is definitely an assortment of all the marvellous ethnic minorities in Xinjiang. What is more mesmerising is the mummies displayed in the museum, nature-dried bodies and clothes from 2000 thousand years ago now vividly displayed in front of you. Please don't take picture of the mummies as this is believed to be a haunting behaviour in Chinese culture. I was in a rush to catch a flight so I was in a hurry to finish the tour. Absolutely appalled.

This was quite a decent museum with many interesting things to see within a comfortable window of 2-3 hours. The main exhibits were with curation in English, which was also well written and informative, but many other interesting things were only labeled in Uyghur and Chinese. Despite the lack of understanding, there were many fascinating objects, mummies and cultural representations. We learned a great deal.
