My friend and I turned up at this hotel with two double rooms booked. The staff on the desk spoke very limited English which was the start of the problems. It was 358¥ per night per room but they wanted us to pay 3200¥ deposit for our stay per room. Crazy deposit of three times the price of our entire stay.

There were no other guests in the communal areas, the restaurant and bar area were completely closed up and didn't look very inviting.

They were kind enough to show us up to the room to have a look and it looked ok but very small.

The swimming pool etc was in the sports center which was not attached to the hotel, you had to go outside and behind the hotel to get to it.

Lastly the hotel was on a very busy main road surrounded by building sites.

We generally got a bad feeling about the place an decided to look for another hotel online. We looked on booking.com and found an alternative, booked it online and got a taxi.

This hotel is ideal for foreigners whose grasp of Mandarin is limited. The hotel itself is very good value, the room was luxurious, the bed extremely comfy, and the design of the room immaculate - and for a price of 338 RMB I was very impressed.

The standout thing for me was the friendliness of the staff and the manager, Jackie. He not only arranged my tickets for the train which saved me a lot of hassle, he even arranged a discount at my next hotel! All in all, it was a pleasure to stay here.

Stayed here for a night to be closer to the airport and next morning's flight. We had no breakfast as we had to leave 30 min before the buffet opened - no offers were made to send us off with a sandwich or so. If you are there on business it might be good to know that the receipts cannot state the company name on the receipt but that these are acceptable for Chinese bookkeeping.

Even though I had a Chinese colleague with me the communication was still difficult because of some processes. We asked (as stated in their in-room information) to arrange a taxi for us to go to the airport but they declined, saying that we should call a number and do it ourselves.

My room was the 5th floor facing the street and sleeping it was pretty loud. Other than that the rooms are clean, functional and welcoming. I would stay there again if I need to be close to the airport.

The area around the hotel is very nice and offers a Starbucks, traditional tea house, Mid Lan Coffee and some other restaurants. Really enjoyed this!

Room Tip: The rooms facing the road are pretty loud - try to pick one facing the other direction.

The Art Senses Hotel is a bit confusing - it has a huge sign above the entrance declaring it as the 'Sovereign' Hotel. Not sure which it is or if it was the Sovereign and is now Art Senses but the signage hasn't been changed. In any case this is a very average hotel - not in a bad way - in a functional way. It is a clean basic hotel ideal for business travelers.

Be aware that English is limited within the hotel, pretty much only the manager spoke English with any confidence but the hotel staff are very quick to ensure you are looked after and if they can't help they'll find the manager who certainly will.

Room is fine. Only cable channels in English was CNN but we are in the heart of China.
The only area that was not so average was the breakfast - the food selection was very oily and didn't allow for western tastes. Again - in the heart of China so expectations need to be measured.

Would recommend walking up the main road two blocks where there is a major shopping mall which features a large array of restaurants - for dining this was a better option. In fact the huge wide streets are one of many charms to be enjoyed in Chengdu. It's not just about Pandas.

Would I stay here again? For business - probably. If it was for personal travel I'd probably stump up some extra dollars and stay at the Intercontinental or Holiday Inn for a slightly less jarring local experience.

Room Tip: high room far away from the lift lobby - end of corridor if possible to avoid constant guest traffic movements.
