Stayed at this hotel a week back, but usually stay at the Marriott. I must say what a difference it made to my week long trip to the Kingdom. The hotel is well laid out, had a couple of dinning options from the conventional buffet to Spears for Argentinian BBQ and the Fish Market.

If you dont feel like using the well equipped gym and it is not too hot then you can walk over the road and walk along the corniche to view the Jeddah fountain, that is reported to e taller than the one in Geneva. There are plenty of restaurants to choose from in the local area serving traditional arabic, fish and other local dishes and if your missing your burgers - there is a McDonalds two minutes walk from the hotel.

I would recommend the club level where you can have breakfast in peace and quiet. At night they serve unlimited hot canapies along with a selection of non alcoholic beverages.

Room Tip: Go for the Club Level

The room had a musty smell. When we complained, they offer to change rooms but the new room had the same problem. It was a bit cramped for a five stars hotel. The desk was fine, with American Europeans and Saudi plugs, but the chair was terrible. I could not use it for working. The window looked at Red Sea and the big fountain, one had to stand in a specific corner of the room to see them. It would have been nice to see from the bed...
Women cannot go to the gym. I was told that in many hotels, there are "male" periods and "female" periods for gyms, but this is not the case in the Intercontinental.
The wi-fi was free and worked fine but one had to sing up every 8 hours, in a procedure that involved going from webpage to webpage, and writing down stuff that the browser could not "remember".
The room service took sometimes a bit too long (for a salad!) and there were variations in the dishes (for instance, one day my pasta came with hazelnuts, the next day, the same pasta came with walnuts.)
The staff was very friendly and helpful.
The breakfast buffet was excellent.

I stayed at this hotel for one week in May. The hotel is in a great location with many shops and restaurants within walking distance. The staff was amazing. Especially Doorman Aslam. He actually showed me my room when I checked in to assure it was acceptable. He also helped arrange a driver and sightseeing outing for my colleagues and I. This was through Avis, on site. We had a nice driver that took us to the sook where he accompanied us. We were with him for two hours for a modest 250 riyals. I had a lovely view of the fountain. Many nice amenities in the room. Good welcome kit that included a razor, comb, toothbrush, etc. There was a fresh rose in the bathroom. There is a dial in the bath that you can turn up nice spa like music. Great shower/water pressure. Buffet dinner was a little expensive, great selection but if you don't want to pay so much, ordering from the menu is possible and food good. The Executive Lounge was comfortable though a little small and during busy times it was sometimes difficult to find a table. Food in the Lounge was good at breakfast, selection and variety lacking for lunch and dinner. If I had one suggestion it would be about the balcony. Every room has a balcony. Mine was dirty with old cigarette butts and dirt. There is NO furniture on the balcony. Much of the day it is too hot to sit out there but in the evening it would have been nice if it was clean and had some furniture. The area is more relaxed for women than in some parts of the Kingdom. I did wear abaaya and cover my head when outside in the area, but never felt uncomfortable walking alone. In the hotel conservative clothing for women is common and you will not endure stares without abaaya or head covered in the hotel restaurants, etc.
