“Way up high”
Reviewed 10 November 2011

These walls are unlike any other I have seen as they climb way up the mountainside. I understand the view is spectacular but our physical conditioning preventing us from attempting the strenuous climb.

“Good exercise, excellent views”
Reviewed 3 November 2011

This is a great hike if you're reasonably fit and don't mind walking up/down rocky surfaces. The paths are pretty well maintained and the views are amazing. As other reviewers mentioned, you don't have to climb all the way to the top to get excellent views of the walled city of Kotor and the surrounding area. If you plan to climb all the way to the fortress ruins at the top, you should probably allow at least two hours (unless you move really quickly and don't plan on taking any time to enjoy the view). Also, be sure to have water and snacks with you as nothing is available along the trail. The ruins of the Church of Our Lady of Remedy (1518) is about the halfway point of the hike and from that location, you get a good view of Kotor. The ruins of the Castle of St. John at the top of the mountain is the old fortress that guarded Kotor from the east. This is part of the UNESCO Natural and Cultural-Historical Region of Kotor and there was a 3 Euro fee to use the trail. There is no wheelchair access and if you have children with you, keep an eye on them so they don't go too close to the edge of the trail as there are no guardrails that you would find on main trails in national parks in the U.S.

“Great Hike, Great Views, Wear Good Shoes!”
Reviewed 14 October 2011

I found other reviews pretty accurate. A steep climb up and down, good walking/hiking shoes highly recommended. Whole trek takes about 1 1/2 hours--but you can stop at the church half way up if it is too much. Well worth the effort--great views of the town and bay. Probably not good for someone who doesn't exercise regularly.

“Worth the hike - but wear good shoes”
Reviewed 1 September 2011

The hike is very steep in some areas. The views are beautiful, but you needn't go all the way to the top to enjoy it. We made it about 2/3 up and as some friends went higher, they realized that you get a beautiful view the entire time.

Wear good shoes - much of steep climb is stairs or smooth stones. Not for the overweight or elderly! The cost was a few euros for entry, but it is a historic site. You can probably get a good feel for the area within just an hour or two, then on to the beach!

“Great Exercise & Views”
Reviewed 28 July 2011

This is a must for anyone physically able to hike up to the old Fort ruins behind Kotor. It only takes 30-40 minutes to the top and yes, it's steep with steps and rocky uneven terrain, but well worth the hike for the views. Cost is 3 euros at one of the two entry points which are at the back of the town where the walls join the base of the mountain. There are tourist signs (blue and white) on the walls by each starting point and manned entrances during the day, they are not so easy to find but are obvious when you do find them! Wear sensible footwear, many people do not and it didn't look so manageable! Was pouring with rain when I went but still loved it.
