Owner description: Galerija Meštrović houses the masterpieces of Ivan Meštrović carved in marble, bronze and wood. The house was built based on Meštrović's design (1931 - 1939), and was intended to be his family summer residence, working studio and exhibition space. It is surrounded by a Mediterranean garden which, with its bronze sculptures and the view of the sea and of central Dalmatian islands makes a unique example of landscape architecture.

If you like sculpture, don't miss this lovely museum, and visit the chapel just down the road too. Sorry we didn't have time to travel to the mausoleum where Mestrovic is buried as well.

We walked out to the gallery from the centre of Split along the road but found on our return that it is possible to walk along the waters edge (which was a much more pleasant experience).

Some of the work that is normally in the gallery was on loan to an exhibition in Poland - but enough remained to make it a very worthwhile experience (particularly the statuary placed in the garden)

Absolutely loved this quiet and serene place with the amazing paintings and sculptures. Enjoy the view from the upper floor and a walk in the garden admiring the sculptures. There is a cathedral nearby which is definitely worth a visit too.
Highly recommend and a great escape from touristy areas!

The gallery of the famous Croatian sculpture, Ivan Mestrovic, was built as his private residence. It contains an acclaimed collection of premier modern works. Ivan was born on 15 August 1883. and died on 16 January 1962. Ivan was a 20th century artist and architect. Auguste Rodin once said that Meštrović is the greatest phenomenon among sculptors and even greater sculptor than he was. The gallery is set in beautiful gardens with large works adorning the grassed areas. The view from the upper floor to the sea is inspiring. I attended this gallery as part of a group tour and we arrived just on opening time and had virtually a private viewing from the moment we arrived to the time we left. It is amazing work and not so far from Split, even within walking distance or a short taxi ride. On arrival there are steps to the main path, then steps into the gallery and further steps to the 1st floor. There doesn't appear to be an easier way into the gallery. Also there are public toilets located inside the building. The gallery seems to be divided into the different stages of the artist's career and includes his different styles and the media he used. The gallery didn't have a cafe, so bring your own water to this one. The gallery is a great place to visit and highly recommended.

Since I was not familiar with the works of Ivan Mestrovic, this was very informative. The gallery is housed in the home of the sculptor, which is memorable itself for its size and location along a beautiful coastline. Well worth a visit to view these amazing works of art. Be aware, however, that entrance to the house requires climbing a rather long flight of stairs, and there are stairs in the house as well.
