“Exceeded Expectations In Every Way”
Reviewed 27 July 2012

II just returned from a wonderful getaway of 3 nights at the Jared Coffin House on Nantucket Island. It was a very pleasant experience from start to finish.
I was travelling with my sister and brother and sister in law - all looking forward to their first visit to Nantucket. We wanted a nice place in walking distance of restaurants and town. The Jared Coffin House came to us by meeting our location needs. The pleasant experience exceeded our expectations in all ways. The front desk was very welcoming as we arrived. There was lemonade there in the entry, and they offered us cold bottles of water to bring to our room, This was very welcome on a very hot summer afternoon. The rooms were pleasant and nicely appointed. There was a nice sitting area with free use of a computer just down the hall.
We rented a Jeep for a day and the Innkeeper was so helpful with all of our plans, including providing us with beach chairs, towels, umbrella & water.
There was delicious coffee in the nicely appointed living room to start our mornings. The staff had more than enough suggestions of where to go for breakfast, lunch or dinner.
Overall we felt that the staff knocked themselves out to be sure that we were happy with our stay. I would recommend this Inn to anyone who asks.

We stayed two nights in Nantucket and loved the location of the Jared Coffin House. Almost smack in the middle with plenty of shops and restaurants close by. The house in itself is like a painting - fantastic brick house.

But... We checked in at 6.30 in the afternoon and the first room we got had a very small bed - it would have been impossible to fit two persons in the room. We went down to the reception and asked for another room with a larger bed. After some time they found another room - but we had to pay for the upgrade...

In the new room the bed was bigger but very uncomfortable, the configuration of the bathroom was very strange and the air condition unit was very noisy. But as we only stayed two nights we could to bother the hassle of changing room again.

Room Tip: Ask for a newly renovated room (if there are any).

Dear MrHB - thanks for staying with us and thanks for sharing your experience. I am very sorry to hear that you had to move rooms.

As you may know, hotels, B&B's etc. have different rooms types. We have 6 different room types here at the Jared Coffin House allowing us to offer many different options and price points. You had booked a room with a full size bed and I would agree with you that a full size bed is a little too small for two adults (although it does work for some people). So, after looking at the options, we were able to offer you a room with a queen size bed which seemed to work (except for the mattress - which I have checked, all due respect - it is less than a year old and in my professional opinion, is in fine condition).

Thanks for the kind commnets regarding the main building which was build by Jared Coffin in 1845. Due to its age, there are many different configurations (and room types as mentioned above) - and I do agree some certainly have character. I like to think that is part of the draw in staying at such a historic property, athough as you have pointed out, perhaps not for everyone.

The air conditioner was in fact too loud - thank you for mentioning it.

I happened to review your other Nantucket reviews and I agree with your comments on Met on Main. Its a great new spot - one of my favorites, you can't go wrong - breakfst, lunch or dinner. The back patio, upper area is the place to sit.

All the best to you MrHB - Jim Storey, GM

This building is not to be missed!!! It is a wonderful historic site!! The feeling of being there just makes me happy :)

On a sourer note, the people are clearly annoyed by your presence. If I worked at a fancy hotel, I would always be chipper, even to locals (like me) whose parents are visiting the island.

Dear MinnieD1896 - I really would like to hear about your visit to the Jared Coffin House so if you would contact me at the hotel I would really appreciate it.

I am glad you feel the Jared Coffin House is a wonderful historic site as I couldn't agree with you more. Thank you for taking the time to stop by with your parents.

As you may imagine, due to the historic nature of the main buiding and the location, we receive many many walk in visitors daily. We welcome the interest and try to make everyone feel at home (even if they are not staying with us).

The only time this becomes a bit of an issue is when people not staying with us enjoy our complimentary coffee and/or lemonade. I wish we could accomodate everyone that walked in with coffee or lemonade, but it would be impossible for us to keep up with the demand. And when trying to control this, sometimes people get offended.

As a local such as yourself, I would be grateful to hear from you. Thanks, Jim Storey, GM

We stayed at Jared Coffin and had a wonderful time. Staff called in advance asking if they could assist with outing and restaurant reservations, and when we arrived were even able to accommodate our need for an early check-in due to a red-eye flight from the west coast. Rooms were clean and charming, as was the rest of the inn - and staff were always gracious. It truly allowed our long weekend stay to be as seamless as possible.

This beautiful inn was built by Jared Coffin, patriarch of one of the original families who settled on Nantucket Island. Very comfortable, well-appointed rooms and a great restaurant. Convenient to many of the popular sites on the main streets and to other great restaurants. Excellent service from all the staff.
