We hiked up to the summit of Mount Greylock via Cheshire Harbor Trail. By the time we summitted, we were all really hungry and thirsty. Thank goodness for the chef and staff at Bascom Lodge! I read somewhere that the chef retired from being a chef in a New York restaurant to feed hungry and appreciative hikers, and do weddings too (Bascom Lodge and the summit can be accessed by car). I am writing this review because the ice cream sandwich was an unbelievable little piece of heaven: home-made almond flavored sugar cookies, with strawberry ice cream, it's memorable!

My wife and I have stayed here many times over the last 30 years. The state contracts out the operation, and the operators change frequently, so you're never sure what you're going to find.
The place used to be a bit shabby, but it's been spruced up, with fresh wallpaper and refinished floors, etc None of the rooms have their own bathroom, and the community bathrooms don't have showers in them. You shower (no baths) in one of 3 available on the second floor. Hot water can be unpredictable.
Dinner is pedestrian but ample. You're told free breakfast comes with the room, but the only free thing is a muffin; everything else is ala carte, and not cheap.
Assuming you don't want to stay in the bunk room, a regular room is $125 and a large room $150. To be blunt, they're not worth it, since there are numerous motels and B&Bs nearby that are less. What you get for the money is a rustic experience staying at the top of a mountain. Don't expect a perfect night's sleep; the place is a bit noisy, especially a common door at the top of the stairs that always slams.
The staff is neither friendly or unfriendly, and a bit slow.

Was visiting my daughter at school and we decided to do a 'road' trip drive around the country side to see the fall colors. The drive was spectacular and the end point was Bascom Lodge and the beautiful view of the valley. We had such a pleasant afternoon. Mount Greylock was spectacular.

After walking around the Summit I decided to check out this place on top of the Mountain. As the name describes it is a lodge with restrooms, sitting area, information, and a decent place to eat. You have some nice views if you sit by the windows. The service is ok and so is the food. Prices is on par with places that have attractions.

That is not to say that it isn't worth the trip. The views from the summit of Mt. Greylock, where the Lodge is located, are spectacular. The atmosphere is warm and friendly, the fire is roaring in cold weather in the big stone fireplace. Beams are hand hewn, and the beer selection is good. Unfortunately, the food is only so-so. In bad weather, the road up the mountain can be treacherous.
