That cold night our walk ended near Izumi, and we dropped in willing to eat something hot.

In response to our request to find a table the apathetic waiter asked if we booked, and having heard «no» had merely... shrugged his shoulders silently!

The cafe was half empty, with some tables reserved, the others free, and the outdoor terrace almost empty. But the waiter made no efforts to accommodate us - neither suggested a terrace or a free table, nor limited our time at a reserved table, as some other places would. After all, it’s just a sushi-bar, not a Michelin restaurant, no one sits here for hours! Even a simple word of polite apology would actually do.

We used to be permanent customers. No longer coming back.

Enjoyed the nearby Sushia on Moskovskaya Street instead.

Izumi is a network of Japanese cafés or small restaurants. I can’t call them sushi-bars as their offer is much more diversified. The one reviewed is located on Moskovska Str., relatively close to Kyiv Pechersk Lavra and WWII museum.

This small café with only one hall is cozy and offers good value for your money. The menu doesn’t have many entries (I seemed to try it through within a month), but is quite diversified and includes snacks, salads, soups, traditional Japanese meals (nigiri, temaki, sashimi, tempura, teriyaki etc), grilled meat, fish and vegetables and desserts. Not all the positions listed in the menu look pure Japanese, but this is rather an advantage, so that no one, even indifferent to Japanese meal, leaves hungry.

I was not fascinated with nigiri, sashimi and rolls cooked there. But the rest of the food is very decent. Soups are especially lovely, as well as grilled fish. The portions are not sizeable, so you can go ahead ordering the full set from salads to deserts. Takeout is also provided.

English menu is available and contains picture of every dish listed, which is convenient for a Japanese meals’ newbie.

The pricing is quite favourable as for the center-located café. Rolls cost from USD 2-3 (100g) to USD 9 (225g); roll sets are available as well at USD 11-22 (500-700-900g); sashimi USD 6 (150g); hayashi vacame salad USD 4.5; average cost of a grilled fish is USD10.

The atmosphere is very simple, no dressing up needed. There’s a TV screen on the wall and this is the only sound accompaniment to your meal.

Most of the tables are designed for four persons max, so only one large group can dine there at a time, if central tables are gathered. Non-smoking area.

Open-air terrace is arranged in summer time, but it’s not at all comfortable: a number of tables is placed on concrete pavement and overview a busy street, although in a certain distance.

Delivery is available but almost never works. Major credit cards (Visa, MC) are accepted.
