We were only in Sofia for a couple of days but didn't want to miss the chance to venture up Vitosha Mountain. We were in Sofia on Sunday which helped as the cable cars are only open on weekends and holidays. We first tried to go up Simeonovo Cable Car by catching the bus 122 outside Vitosha Metro Station. Unfortunately when we got there we found out it was closed but fortunately for us a couple told us as soon as we got off the bus so we could just stay on the bus. They'd been waiting an hour to get the bus back. We then headed all the way back and got the bus 93 to the Dragalevtsi chair lift. It was running so we got it up the mountain. The views were amazing. We also had a great walk around when we were at the top and drink and snacks. Unfortunately because we didn't wear proper walking shoes we couldn't do too much exploring. On the way down we found out that one of the cable cars had broken. They offered us a bus down or we could walk. We decided to walk. It was a difficult walk. Very steep with uneven ground. Fortunately we are good walkers so were ok but others we walked past including families were finding it treacherous and dangerous. We really enjoyed our day up the mountain and would do it again. Be prepared for the cable cars to stop working though.

An other dimention for your city trip. Beautiful lake and waterfalls. We did this trip with the Sofia Green Tours. This are volunteers and the tour is free. The guides speaks english and give a lot of information about the neigbourhood. They organise also tours in the city centre, so as a free food tour.

The Vitosha mountain dominates the landscape of Sofia. The peak of the mountain disappears into the cloud level and really gives great feature and focal point.

Tours of the mountain are available and public transport to Vitosha takes you to the locality.

For those on a budget you can enjoy the gravitas and beautify from the city level.

Definitely would recommend it if you want to have a nice walk in the beautiful bulgarian nature without having to go far away from the city. Many places and churches to visit, many views to look from, just amazing!

If in Sofia, get the Metro to Vitosha station and hop on the 93 bus which stops beside the huge shopping centre. At the last stop, head right and you'll land beside the ski lift! For 10lv you'll get a return ticket!! Have a walk!! On the way down stop (between ski lift stops) in for a bite to eat and a beer in the restaurant. But be warned that the toilet is an outdoor dunny and literally a hole in the ground! Use at your peril! We had a great time here and please wrap up! It got very cold!!
