We had a very enjoyable lunch here after an initial glitch where we were told to go and take a seat and someone would be with us shortly to take our order (this is their restaurant not the Hula Bar just to clarify). In all fairness this was around 11.30(ish)am and they were setting up for their buffet lunch but it would have been better to know that we should just order drinks rather than sitting admiring the (very nice) view and enjoying the (again - very nice) ocean breeze coming in to where we sat rather than waiting for someone that simply didn't front after a wait of around half an hour. (In fairness possibly a few minutes less but it seemed a long time). Anyway - not such an optimal start and we finally went to the bar and ordered drinks and then it all went like clockwork. Drinks arrived (I enjoyed their pina colada - cliche I know, but very refreshing) and we shared a seafood platter. While I don't want to rave about their seafood platter and make out like it was the 'best thing ever' it was pretty good. $49.00 and there was border line to enough food to defeat us and none of it was bad. Most of it was pretty good in fact. (Don't go by the picture I intend to attach - there was stuff 'hiding' behind the glass in the center - which, as a - by the way, had a heap more shrimp in it than it looks like in it).

Overall it was an enjoyable experience and I'd happily return to do a rerun (minus the wait time for initial service).

Thank you for your comments. We usually assign 1-2 staff members on ipads to manage customer orders from tables. The 'ipad staff' usually like to muck in and setup and clear tables when they have been instructed to focus only on managing customer requests. The $49 seafood platters are intended for one person. We booked a dayroom before our flight to LA, and had dinner at the restaurant. The seafood plater was very reasonably priced and very good, as well as the local beer! We just used our room to store our luggage, shower and change before our flight left, which was very helpful and the room was clean.
We rented a scooter right at the hotel for a last quick trip around the island! All service was very quick, friendly and helpful!
The hotel also was conveniently located across the road from where I had booked to get a tattoo before leaving the island (KAREHA tattoo with Raniera Ellison and Stormy Kara = Pacific Ink and Akairo Creative). I love the tattoo, done very professional, turned out perfect & I get compliments wherever I go!

highlights include the view (Ocean and poolside), great for families, good food and friendly staff. Parking is problematic, so you can end up parking your car a fair bit away on a busy night. They have $15 lunch buffets, and $20 breakfast buffets.
However my favourite menu item has been the steak sandwich. You might get a slightly different version each time (depending on the availability of bread or vegetables on the island), but the quality is always topnotch.

The airport has no restaurant. The Islander is a short distance away so we put our bags on a cart and walked over. We must have gotten a new waitress. Took a while to get our food but the food was good. Lots of young people were going to a back room for some reason.

We are glad to read you enjoyed your meals with us. We do have new team members in training and they will improve their service. The restaurant is quite large and can get quite busy at busy dining periods: lunch 12noon to 2pm; and dinner: 6-8pm. Young people your saw were moving the Hula Bar, adjacent the dining room.

We were advised that this place is where the locals come on sundays and is fairly affordable,we came in for a buffet lunch here and the food was good, the ribs and bread were delish!! $15 lunch buffet, there doesnt seem to be a whole lot to choose from but compaired to eating out in town this was good value for the price. There is a sign outside advertising $3.50 beer/spirits all day everyday however when we had lunch, partner also had a beer and we were charged $5, not knowning that If u want the $3.50 beer then they have a hula bar next to the seating area and thats where you need to go. As tourists you see cheap beer sign and head in and start buying thinking they are $3.50 then get the bill and your paying $5 per beer if ordered from the reasturant not knowing the huka bar is where u buy the $3.50 beer. There is a pool there so perfect to take the kids togs for a splash around while you eat/drink.
Beautiful beach views from both the restaurant and the bar, really breathtaking.

Thank you for dining with us for the $15 lunch buffet. Our all-day-happy-hour offering NZD3.50 beers and more is specific to the Hula Bar, on the beach at the Islander Hotel. We welcome families to bring the kids to swim in the pool while mum and dad have meals and drinks right on the waterfront.
