Uniquely Uruguayan Experience

5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 29 May 2017
Went on an excursion from Montevideo to the Estancia. On arrival, we were greeted with a drink of Medio y Medio (or water or coke) and (meat) pastries. Before the BBQ lunch, there was tractor trailer ride through part of the 2,000 acres, horse control demonstartion by Martine (gaucho) & a cooking demonstration (pastel de membrillo).

The brilliant lunch was massive. Entrée was the spicy sausages & sweetbreads, Next was Fondue made with local cheese, Main Course was platters of BBQ Meat (5+ diffeent cuts) with Salad and dessert was ice cream. Meal took 2 1/2 hours

This place is for real. You can feel the history around you. The rooms are huge, bathrooms huge and beds are super comfy. The grounds are really expansive and beautiful with mowed lawns everywhere. It's located right on a private beach that feels and looks like out of a movie. The steps leading to the beach are out of this world and super old. Just cool. For kids this place is great, tons for them to do. We only stayed a short while, but I could have settled in for awhile.

This place is the authentic old world uruguay estancia. Worth the visit!

La Baguala is a well hidden retreat for the uruguayan well to do, just outside Montevideo near the A1 to Colonia del Sacramento. A remote but fairly new and excellent kept estate near the ocean. Private beach, poolarea en tennislawn and stables for your
(Polo) horses. The interior of the hotel is like in Old paradors, with open fireplaces and a mixture of beautiful rural antiques and modern twists of good taste. Excellent kitchen and good winelist. Rooms are simply spacious and perfect. The royal treatment is wat you get here. You should have your own car to get here.

The place is outstanding. There is a small private beach where you can take amazing sunset pictures. Our room was enormous. There is a nice balcony with sea view and and big bathroom. Breakfast in bed was good and there was a courtesy champagne waiting for us. Totally recommended.

We tried the restaurant for lunch and cannot say enough about the food. The service was cordial and fine, but the food was absolutely delicious. At the time we were there, their Chef even made the breads (a delicious variety!) from scratch and when the bread basket came to the table we said "oh no!" meaning we would stuff ourselves badly even before the appetizer and main course arrived! And we did. But it was delicious. We had delicious shrimps as an appetizer and then rack of lamb. We sat overlooking a very large park/garden, lots of green, lavender, birds, very old trees....and the park in turns overlooks the River plate. This was a farm from a very traditional, well known family back in the days, and it was purchased to turn into a country hotel and a place for weddings and large events, as well as in the not so distant future, sell the land lots to make a private residential neighborhood of country homes. They also work with Criollo and other fine horses, organizing events around horses. The place is privileged. It is only a few minutes outside of the capital city and we would imagine a lovely place to relax for the weekend. Definitely good food, very very calm, horses, sheep, the beach, shaded areas, absolutely fantastic rooms. All in all a very pretty place, with its own tiny spa but good enough with all that is needed. La Baguala is definitely a place to stay a day or two and relax, or go for lunch, tea time or dinner. We still have to try their tea time!

Room tip: All rooms overlook pastures or gardens - lots of nature around the place. None seem to be close to any noise at all. Very peaceful place.
