Review of Hotel Palacio
4.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 20 Feb 2024via mobile
It is good, clean and in the middle of the center area. You can walk everywhere from this hotel in Montevideo. Staff is very friendly. They are helpful. We loved the lift, it looks like it is from 1900’s time. They offer free coffee everytime of the day and there is a good terrace.
The only problem i had is the internet connection. It only worked in first day. And as a foreigner here, it is a huge problem.

I had booked into the Palacio and had one really simple question about the best way to get to the hotel; this is information that most hotels have on their websites.
So I emailed the hotel and they simply ignored the email.
Second email, I translated the query into Spanish, but they ignored this as well.
Next, I used the query facility on the website and sent the brief question in both Spanish and English. They ignored both.
So - fourth attempt - I rang the hotel. A woman finally answered, immediately said "Non Inglese" and promptly put the phone down.
In the end, I cancelled the reservation and sent a message through Hotels.com in both English and Spanish, explaining to the hotel staff why I had done so. As you probably guess by now, they ignored this as well.
And there you have it really.
If you like dealing with a hotel whose staff appear to consider communicating with guests to be beneath them, this is the hotel for you.

Ignoraron a ambos.

A lovely old school hotel in an excellent location.

Try to get room 66 [or 67] which has a balcony with views over the city and the port.

Staff displayed variable ability or willingness to be helpful-e.g. in providing information like bus timetables [old school doesn’t mean not being able to use the internet].

Early check out time of 10.00 another negative point but I would definitely stay there again.

The property was very conveniently located. It had a beautiful old-style, wrought iron elevator and a small but nice rooftop patio. The room also had some nice old-timey touches like the crown molding. The bathroom was a good size (compared to others we encountered on our SA adventures) and the shower had excellent water pressure. The receptionist who greeted us provided a map and lots of helpful advice about sights nearby. My friend enjoyed the coffee available near reception each morning.

BUT, while beautiful, the elevator was ultimately very slow and sometimes didn't come at all. The furniture in the room showed some wear. While it fit with the antique-y theme, I probably would have removed some of it at that stage of dilapidation. Our room's bathroom when we arrived wasn't fully clean (there was hair on the floor and in the shower), and the waste basket's pedal opening mechanism was broken so it was awkward to use. We removed the wastebasket's top to make it easier for us (and hoping the whole thing would be replaced by housekeeping) but they just set the top back on (broken) in its inconvenient state again. And not the hotel's fault, but the entire 1.5 days we were visiting, one couple monopolized the rooftop deck - they and their belongings were spread out there every time we checked - so we didn't feel like we were welcome to use it.

This is an early 20th century hotel that has been tastefully renovated to keep its original character. The staff were friendly and helpful, the room clean and well equipped. The price of the room was extraordinarily modest. A great choice for a stay in downtown Montevideo.

Very old hotel very well located in the old city and near the pedestrian street, Sarandí. Not far from the Buquebus terminal, the carneval Museum, Cathedral, Museo Gurevich. The room I had was tiny but I was only there to sleep. It has a TV, refrigerator, safety deposit box in the room and very good AC, which you mostly don’t need. I had a little balcony facing the back so I got a lovely cross breeze. The breakfast is small but since there is a fridge, I bought some yogurt to add to the croissant and tea/coffee they provided. The staff is very nice but has minimal English. Fantastic value in terms of cost. The bathroom is pretty new although the shower needed some maintenance.

Room tip: No parking really. I don’t know if there are any larger rooms, but I wouldn’t recommend this hotel for two people although there were many
