Sol y Luna - Relais & Chateaux

My only regret in our recent trip to Peru was that we only spent two mights at Sol y Luna. This was ostensibly a pit stop between our visit to the Amazon and Macchu Picchu/Cusco. The Peruvian travel agent suggested the hotel when I mentioned that I wanted to go horseback riding and so we added it on at the last minute.

What fantastic place. The hotel and Urubamba in general remind me of the southern California of my youth, only more verdant and beautiful.

Our deluxe casita was spacious and beautifully decorated. The bathroom was quite large with a wonderful tub.

But the best part of the visit was our horseback ride. Wow! The stables are incredible - you could probably eat off the floor of the tack room and the horses eat hydroponic grass!

My advice is to make sure you add some time to your trip to visit this area of Peru and stay at Sol y Luna. I can imagine that I would have been disappointed if I only was staying for the night on the way to Macchu Picchu.

This is an oasis in the Sacred Valley....a really really wonderful place to stay. Gorgeous little buildings in a garden to just be amazed by.....so many beautiful flowers to look at. The room was fantastic, even though it was the one closest to reception. Noise is not a problem at all here. Two places to eat...the more "formal" restaurant at the front and the casual place down the back near the horses...both have an open fire but the place at the back is more relaxed. Amazing food at both...i ate a local corn cake (yum) a salad with roasted beetroot and goat cheese (at the relaxed place) and a corn soufflé (not as light as you might imagine...don't really recommend it) and a steak...all very good. Would stay here again in a heart beat.

The only small issue i had was trying to change money...impossible and not very friendly lady on reception.

Spa was great - awesome massage and the gift shop had great stuff that i did not see anywhere else.

The grounds and room were gorgeous. The hot water bottles were a great idea for the night-time and kept us warm and toasty! The food was nothing too special at the restaurant... But the grill was superb! I ride horses and found the horse performance to be a bit cruel. I also took a trail ride which was not good at all, although my horse was adorable. We mostly rode through dusty city streets and then we stopped at some old "ruins." The staff was really impersonal and I found it a little too big for my tastes... It didn't feel like a private little oasis, more like a large "garden" version of a way-too-crowded beach resort. Step it up a notch, Sol Y Luna.

This lodge is gorgeous, the grounds and gardens are absolutely wonderful. I absolutely loved the local muralist. The dinner show was entertaining and a welcome surprise, and the staff was helpful in arranging a horse trip for my daughter. This would be an absolutely fantastic setting for a corporate retreat or family reunion. The spread-out nature of the villas left us feeling a little distant.

This was an amazing hotel, especially because of the hot tubs in each room, and the great food.
