“Peru Adventure”

The hotel was a in a great location and setting. The staff was super helpful. The breakfasts were filling. The rooms were average by US standards but had the best beds of anywhere we stayed in Peru.

Really enjoyed my stay at the Antigua, especially with the great deal they had going which got me a "Colonial" room (one of their larger ones, with a big comfortable bed and a small sitting area) for $69/night including breakfast and taxes.

The hotel is in a good spot in Miraflores, an easy walk to the Malecon (cliffs at the beach) in one direction and to Parque Kennedy (lots of restaurants/bars) in the other. It's also on a surprisingly quiet street (Ave Grau) given its fairly central location; nice not to wake up to honking horns or clanging trash cans. The order-from-the-menu (included) breakfast was a cut above the norm, featuring the usual eggs, omelettes, etc. but also Peruvian specialties like tamales and corn-meal pancakes. And with its look of an old mansion converted into a hotel, the place has considerably more charm and character than some of the cookie-cutter chain hotels that are nearby.

The staff is great - helpful and friendly. There was no problem leaving bags after checkout when I had a late flight out. Free WiFi is a nice touch, as are the large bottled-water dispensers on each floor.

The only thing that keeps it from 5 stars is that many of the room windows open onto a shared courtyard, which is attractive but it means you're getting noise from all the other rooms if you leave your window open at night (which you pretty much have to given Lima's heat and lack of A/C). A cheap pair of earplugs pretty much solved this problem for me, but it could be an issue.

All in all, a great place especially in the price category. I would not hesitate to recommend it, or to stay there again next time in Lima.

Stayed in this hotel as part of Gate 1 Peru tour. Hotel gave the feeling of staying in an old Spanish mansion. Free internet. Warm staff. Centrally located. Larco Mar shopping mall and Lovers' Park with its famous "El Beso" (The Kiss) monument are all within walking distance. Supermart, bank, and eating places nearby. Needed to take an afternoon rest after an overnight flight from JFK. However, the noise from hotel's charming water fountain did not allow us to take a nap. Had to call reception. Closing our windows did not help. With Lima's desert-like weather, the rooms have no AC, except for a ceiling fan. Breakfast could be improved. Fresh fruits would come only if you order continental breakfast. Meal experience afforded something different...you have to place an order, not the common buffet-style. Because I did not upgrade in this Gate 1 Peru tour, I can't complain that much.

I probably wouldn't have given this hotel 5 stars had it been the only hotel I stayed at in Peru, but after a series of hotel stays, I thought this was the best one I stayed in in Peru (at that price). The rooms were comfortable and clean, the courtyard was charming and we had hot water all the time. Also the location was pretty central, but also quiet which I came to realize was a very rare thing in South America.

I stayed at this hotel twice through a Gate 1 tour of Peru, with an extra nights pre and post tour (November 2011). Overall I was very satisfied with the hotel. Location wise – it really is excellent. From the hotel you can easily (because it’s a straight line up the street!) walk to an in town Pyramid tourist site and enjoy a tour as well as the renowned restaurant at the site. You can also walk in the other direction down to the waterfront and see Lovers Park and hang gliding to the right, or take a longer walk to the Larcomar shopping area, which also has lots to see. You can walk 2-3 blocks to a grocery store.
Food at the hotel – not so great. I grabbed a quick lunch due to time between tours and would not do it again, (Hamburger and fries.) Breakfast was interesting, not a buffet which we had all other places. They have a set menu with ½ dozen choices, you pick your choice and they bring that to you. The portions are fairly modest. Unless you speak Spanish I don’t think you could get anything changed. It was a nice opportunity to try some “traditional” breakfasts. Strong coffee and juice for everyone. The breakfast room is not very large, they do get full and extremely busy. The ladies are bustling like crazy. Advise giving yourself a decent amount of time if the hotel is full, or hit the bakery on the corner for a change.
There is a great restaurant (begins with a V) across the street on the corner and a cute bakery/restaurant in the same side to the left. I ate at the former twice and it was great food and welcoming server (English menu). They must get lots of guests from the hotel. Also picked up at and ate at bakery which was nice too, but much more casual.
The hotel itself seems to have a great variety of rooms. I turned down a 1st floor room when I arrived (not comfortable with ground floor, I didn’t view the room) and decided later that this room may have opened directly into the main lounge area. I took a 2nd floor room in the back which opens into the courtyard – note this is a small courtyard area with all the rooms and windows opening out there, so if people think it’s cute to be talking to each other window to window, you will ALL get to enjoy this. The room itself was perfectly adequate, comfortable bed, decent but odd sized bathroom, tv reception good. Each floor has complimentary water bottles in the hall way as well as jugs in your room, very welcome and convenient. You will wish you had it everywhere you stay. My second room was on 3rd floor of the front room of the hotel and opened out on an open patio area with flowers. It was really lovely, but again that was a shared space so other guests used it as the evening lounge, so there’s a noise issue. The rooms do not have peepholes to look out.
They have two complimentary computers off lobby area for guest.
Front gate to hotel property is kept locked and you have to be let in and out each time.
I found the hotel staff generally quite cordial, although with groups you can imagine they get busy. When I had a problem with hotel pick up (Gate 1 issue), they were quite responsive via e-mail and for that I remain grateful. I used them to book a couple tours and get the directions to sights and appreciated that assistance. They were very helpful in arranging (and fixing my price) with a street taxi to take me to my next hotel in Peru. For the price and expecting a reasonable and modest level of services, I would have zero hesitation staying here again or steering friends and I’d eat across the street if I wanted something close by. Enjoy!

Room Tip: There seems to be a great variety of rooms, so I would think about providing amenity or floor reques...
