In the last years, many people in Lima suggested that foreigners should not stay in this hotel. The reason: the surrounding area, close to downtown, used to be unsafe, and noone wants guests to be harrassed or attacked or have them see misery, drug addicts etc.

Those times are clearly over.

What used to be the first modern grand hotel of Lima is crawling back, and well worth a stay if you need a place close to downtown businesses.
Little by little it is being modernised. Well, rooms still emanate some 70s charm and some of the layout may seem a bit odd (like the washbasin stuck between the bathroom and the bedroom, separated from the bedroom part by an opaque glass wall. And the enormous atrium (see foto) also seems a bit out of place.

But otherwise this hotel offers all you can expect from a hotelo belonging to this hotel chain. Good beds, good sheets, large-size TV, a good gym, a tennis court, a nice pool, even an outside running track, a nice bar (air condintion set a bit too cold to my taste), and, above all, excellent restaurants.

The breakfast buffet is sumtuous, and offers very good quality, a large variety of fresh frit, pastry, and even an Asian corner, catering to the tastes of many Asian guests (or guests of Japanese origin).
The separate hotel restaurant offers an excellent lunch buffet and meats "rodizo" style (the waiters cutting off slices of meat (a large variety) off large spades, until you say "no thank you".

This is a hotel I would choose again if I return to Lima on business.

Room Tip: better views the higher up you are

We flew into Lima and found this to be a great hotel for basing out of for our trip. We wanted to take in the sights in Lima, but also wanted to visit Caral (the oldest city in the America's with pyramids dating back to the time of the Egyptian pyramids) after seeing a National Geographic program on the sight. From Lima we went on to Cusco and stayed at an Starwood property (Tambo Del Inka - GREAT) in the Sacred Valley.

The hotel and staff in Lima were great, bumped us up to club level and did everything to make our stay enjoyable. This is a great place to start your explorations of Peru.

Great location, beautiful hotel, well appointed rooms. Staff speaks fluent English and are very helpful. Everything you would expect from a 5 star hotel. My biggest complaint and this goes with a lot of higher end hotels. I’ve already shelled out a lot of money to stay here, the least they can do is give you free wifi and make the items in the mini bar reasonably priced. I saw the prices of the items in the minibar and went downstairs to the bar, all I wanted to get were 2 cokes. The price in the room and at the bar was the same, 24 soles for 2 cokes, or about 8 USD. I took a 45 sec walk to a store in the plaza behind the hotel and got them for 3 soles or 1.04 USD. And seriously, its 2012 give us free wifi.

This hotel is a little old looking and not new by any standards. But it is clean, neat, and has great service and a great club lounge and small decent gym. The location is right in the city center. Really the best place to be in Lima. You can walk just about everywhere important and there is a small shopping mall next door. One thing that is quite important to remember in Lima. The airport is 30 minutes away from the city center and hotel and this is with little or no traffic. On a bad traffic day or night (which is most of the time), it will take closer to 45 minutes or an hour each direction. Plan ahead or you will miss your flight. Also Peru is not the safest place to be alone at night. Make sure you book a hotel car to and from the airport. Cost a little more but well worth the investment because you know you have a safe and reliable ride. The airport cabbies come after you hot and heavy when you arrive and you dont know who they really are. Safety is in numbers so if you are not alone, a taxi is fine. But alone at night is not the best idea, male or female. Think about it! If you are going to the Sheraton you clearly are rich by their standards. So just use your head.
