Wow! Wow! Wow!
It's like entering a different world.
The moment I left the taxi and entered the doorway to the restaurant (complete with a security guard armed with a machine gun), it was like stepping into a parallel universe... the noise, pollution and ugliness of Iquitos faded away behind me as if it never existed.
I walked along a decorative coridoor and down a few flights of stairs until I arrived at the waters edge .The restaurant boat was waiting and it took me, and a second armed guard, across the water to the floating restaurant... which also has a swimming pool and pool bar!
The food is exquisite with huge portions - a rare combination.
The service is exemplary.
I ordered the el frio salad (36 soles) which came with 2 dressings. Both were delicious but the fresh mayonnaise was out of this world! I was very happy to see a mountain of shredded palm heart, which has a texture unlike anything else I've ever eaten. It's so light. The pork was delicious and had a lovely smoky taste, but there was far too much of it, and I couldn't eat it all.
My main course was delicious and beautifully presented Paiche; a dense white Amazon fish (68 soles) Steamed and served in a bijao leaf with sautéed shrimps, rice and fried cassava. I didn't finish this meal either! (And that's VERY rare!)
Accompanied by delicious local drinks of Pisco sour and Chilcano de Pisco (both 23 soles) I went home with a buzz, a full belly, and wonderful memories of a very special experience.
Thank you Al frio, you made it worthwhile visiting Iquitos!
