This hotel is quite welcoming with spacious common areas and super-friendly staff who went out of their way to make sure we were happy. Personally I liked the location, away from the busy streets but easily walkable. The walls are thin so bring earplugs if you are a light sleeper; and some rooms don't have windows for natural light, so you may want to ask for one.

Hotel itself was very nice. Breakfast was tasty-avocado, cheese, eggs, marmelade, ham, fruits etc. except coffee. Coffee wasn't good at all. Staff was very helpful and friendly. Location is very nice and quiet. The only disadvantage is, that all rooms have windows to the haul, not with outside view.

The management and the staff not less than perfect: We never experienced a treatment so friendly, but also so helpful in a difficult situation we had with our car.
The situation of the hotel in a historic (but surprisingly quiet) corner not far from the plaza is great. The view from the terraces is spectacular and there are nice places to relax. The old, but renovated building has a lot of charms.
The room and all public areas are very clean and well maintained.
The breakfast has all it takes - very good.
There have been lots of hotels on our tour which were more expensive and have offered less.

Sure, there are higher end hotels in Arequipa. There are even hotels situated in nicer locations. But for the price point, connection to the San Lazaro neighborhood and general feel of the hotel - it is really hard to beat El Portal de San Lazaro.

Located in the quaint area of San Lazaro just a short walk from the main Plaza de Amras de Arequipa - the hotel is an oasis of calm. There are a couple of rooftop seating areas that offer great locations to grab a morning coffee or a late afternoon cocktail. The busyness of the nearby streets melts away once you get inside - as the thick siliar rock walls buffer the noise beautifully.

Add to the overall great formula of the hotel (location, quality of rooms, etc.) is the management. They are friendly, accommodating and eager to please. Overall, this is the best deal in the city for any hotel. Yes, you can splurge on Hotel Libertador de Arequipa - but for only a fraction of the cost you can get a clean, friendly, boutique-like hotel in El Portal.

Room Tip: Ask for an upper floor room facing Misti

We stayed here 2 nights but arrived early from the Bolivia hop bus at 5am. Not expecting anything we were offered a coffee and then the chance to have breakfast. Breakfast was fresh and delicious and to make a tired morning the perfect morning we were able to check into the room around 8.30am. This wasn't expected at all but the manager made it happen and was so friendly as well as all of the staff that worked there! We would stay again the rooms are clean cosy and the outside areas are beautiful.
