“Kids loved”

Zoologico Nacional de Chile
Reviewed 4 January 2018

This a very good zoo, we saw elephant, giraffe, lion, tiger, monkeys, penguin... There were a lot of animals, a good visit, mainly if you are taking kids. Pay attention to the stores that sells water and restrooms because there are a few of it. It's better to take something for the kids to eat, than eat there.

We wanted a chill activity on our last day in Santiago and decided to visit a zoo, since it was a walking distance from our hotel. We arrived close to 4 pm and stayed just a few minutes passed 6pm, was a perfect time, not overcrowded, not too hot outside. You can pay only in cash and local debit cards. Once entered, you cannot re-enter, be mindful of that. We enjoyed watching all the animals, specifically birds! What a fun little trip, and a view of course from the hill is amazing!

This is a nice zoo, well maintained with a good variety of species. It draws attention to how close you can get to many of the animals.

The ticket to get in and most of the food carts only accept payment in cash (or local debit card). There's one snack bar in one of the entrances that accepts credit card though.

Be prepared to have at least the amount in cash for the tickets.

An average zoo but there are some animal what is only live in Chile, for example Nandu and Pudu, or Humboldt Pinguin. The location is in the hill, so you can use funicular to reach the zoo, or walk but up to the hill, so consider you can do it.
If rain or rained please bring with you that dress what you can messy with mud, there are not cement pavement anywhere.

This is your typical old style zoo, where the animals are in cages that are too small. These types of zoo's depress me and I feel awful for the animals that are in there. If you are looking for something to do with the kids, it will keep them entertained for a few hours. As you walk up to the zoo, you will get an extremely strong smell of urine. The people that work there are nice and friendly. The kids will likely enjoy seeing all the animals. There is a wide variety of animals all located on a steep hill. There are many native animals there, which was interesting to see. There are lots of nice views from the zoo. If you have troubles walking or are in a wheelchair, I would not recommend this place. The baboons seem to have large deformities on their rumps; I wonder if it is a type of cancer.
