“Very reasonable and helpful staff”
Reviewed 10 December 2008

All in all for budget accomodation this was perfect for our 1 week stay in Singapore. The location is very central. On the first night we booked a private room but found that it was more reasonable to book a dorm which was clean and quite comfortable.

Stayed December 2006

Not being a huge fan of hostels-based on bad experiences-we chose the Bugis Backpackers on the recommendation of friends who had stayed there last year. Not really expecting much, the Bugis Backpackers was a pleasant surprise-once you get past having to lug your stuff up 3 flights of stairs.

The hostel is run by very friendly and quiet people. Check-in was quite efficient and direct. You pay up front for your room. Access to the rooms is across the hallway and only accessed by a swipe card system-added security which was quite reassuring. We stayed in a twin private room-which was essentially a small 4x6m pink room. Quite clean, a pillow and a small blanket provided but it was sufficient and A/C which was very quiet by AC unit standards. The bathroom was a shared facility-4 shower units and toilets-most looked as if they had been recently redone so were relatively clean. Not the hottest showers but powerful. Laundry facilities also available.

The most appealing feature of the Bugis was it's prime location. Nestled nicely between some retail shops and a KFC, the hostel was located around the corner from Bugis Village, supposedly one of the largest street markets in Singapore. Across the road, Bugis Junction, a large shopping complex as well as an MRT station. Bugis Backpackers is also conveniently located within walking distance to many places of interest, such as the Colonial District.

You can easily hear your neighbours next door which can be annoying if it is very late at night or very early in the morning! The showers were prone to nightly infestations of flies and other bugs, but by morning they were usually gone. The mixed dorm rooms were also quite clean, very airy and bright. For safety i.e. girls travelling alone, the private rooms are not too much more expensive, and probably worth the extra for the security at night. Definitely a decent hostel, by hostel standards, but quite expensive for what it was. However, bear in mind, Singapore is quite expensive anyway!

Thanks to Trip Advisor, we knew about the "only cash" payment, so that was not a problem. The private room was very nice and clean, I love the bed sheeds, but I will use some place to put my things besides the broken little table. We have a good view of the street, but the noises can be a problem if you like to over sleep. The location is probably the best value.
We got clear instructions as soon as we got there. They lady in the fornt desk show us the place, how to open the door, and they make very clear that we have to check out at 10 am. No problem!
What I will change? there is not a kitchen. Only a fridge and a water heather. Not even a microwave. When I try to heat a soup, just a can soup, the lady in the front desk told me that there is only hot water.
Also there is not any security service, and even that they said they can keep your lugage, the truth is that you have to leave your things (even your laptop) in a dark hall, far away from the front desk, so nobody will look for them. The worst part is that here are lockers, but for some reason, they don't let you use them (???)
The place was nice and clean, the service was ok, excellent location. I can manage that there is not kitchen, but not the lack of security. If they let us use the lockers, I can go back.

I am sorry to hear that you find our kitchen facilities inadequate for your needs.

We used to provide a microwave for guests' use; but had to remove it for safety reasons. Guests have been known to put aluminium foil or metal containers into the microwave and leaving it unattended, or forgotten. Some are unaware that placing metal objects inside a microwave can result in damage and fire, and we simply do not have the resources to be keep vigilances over these misuses. Also, cheap eating places are plentiful around our hostel, therefore we decided that for the safety of all, the microwave has to be removed.

The lockers the reviewer refer to are for our staff's use. Guests have been informed to lock their luggage securely prior to depositing in the open area and not to expose valuables like laptops, cameras wallets hanging from their bags. From our experience, crimes of dishonesty result from easy and simple opportunities created by careless guests with unsecured and exposed valuables. Criminals will not risk stealing a big backpack without knowing the contents - moreover, how far do you think they can run away in Singapore with a big bulky loot before they are caught by our vigilant Police and be subject to its well-known penalties?

FYI, we need to impose a strict checkout time of 10 am as we have limited rooms and need to have them cleaned by our cleaners who are only here for short period. Do understand that we need to get our rooms ready for incoming guests by latest 2 pm each day.

The hostel in on the 3rd floor of old shophouse building. The location is quite convenient 3 mins walk to Bugis MRT and 3 mins walk across the road to Bugis shopping mall, food court and restaurants.

No Bathroom ensuit. The shower rooms are shared, the size is too small, no space for hanging towels or shower stuffs.

However, the is reasonable price for backpacker.

We arrived to the hostel after a five hour bus ride from Kuala Lumpur and were hoping for some sort of hospitality, but this is not the place! We were greeted with a "pay the money now please, no viewing of the room, only cash, otherwise no room". We were tired and it was very humid in Singapore and were hoping they would allow us at least put our backpacks down, but NO, this is not the sort of place to expect any sort of hospitality, it is all about MONEY. My husband had to run out into the streets and get the cash to satisfy their greed for money. The people who are running the hostel are the worst human beings in the world, I would never recommend to stay in this hostel even to the devil himself. The room was very small, no window, like prison. The shower was also small and the whole place was very stuffy and unpleasant, not welcoming at all. If you are looking for a nice place to stay, please DO NOT STAY AT BUGIS BACKPACKERS- YOU WILL BE RIPPED OFF AND YOU WILL HATE IT!!!!
Thanks, Martin from Australia

We undertstand we are tardy in responding to marthaduff's review written in 2007. However, we felt that we need to set the facts straight in view of Tripadvisor's influence on .

We are running a business, not a charitable organisation, and of course we have to run it with a view to profit, like it or not. In our early days, we are naive enough to assume that guests are honourable and will make prompt payment for services rendered. Unfortunately, our experiences were dotted with many instances of guests playing a cat-and-mouse game when time for payment comes. Being a small business, we do not have the manpower or resources to hunt for such errant guests whose life objective is to evade payment at all cost, or simply to make the payment process an exhausting one for us. That is why we have implemented a payment-on-arrival policy, which is stated clearly and unequivocally on all reservations. The reviewer has prior notice of this condition stated on his booking, which upon non-compliance with our conditions, we reserve the right not to check them in.

Our payment process is not at all different from what one will encounter in any lodging establishments, where full payment is required at the point of check-in. To extend the concept of hospitality to the exemption of such process with no security whatsoever, is impractical. Our "greed for money" is restricted to retrieving payment for what is rightfully us to request, no more no less. And please note, we DID NOT rip him off by asking for more than what he is contractually bound to pay us.

We would also wish to reiterate the fact that windows are not always a given, especially in budget accommodation places. And we believe our rooms are of decent and acceptable size for establishments in the "no-frills/hostel" category.

We are fully aware that certain guests prefer a free-wheeling, no rules no restrictions type of backpackers' place, where drunkenness and party characters are the norm. However, our target clientele are those true-blue and increasing rare travellers who still believe in having a tranquil sleep after an exhausting day out.

To each hostel its own rules its own culture its own atmosphere.

We do not understand why marthaduff compares us with "Communist China". Singapore is a capitalist state, where there is no free lunch - everything comes at a price.
