“Oriental Mandarin”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 April 2012

If you want to stay close to the action in Singapore, Hotel Mandarin is the place. Lots of action going on close by, tour buses etc right at the door, upscale and downscale shopping close by. Rooms were large and comfortable, rates were GOOD - we staying saturday thru to Tuesday after a cruise.

Room Tip: If you can, book in Sundays through one of the sell off sites - you get some real good rates. But, d...

I'm living in Singapore but from time to time it's great to spend a weekend by a swimming pool of a nice hotel. From the pool, u can see skyline of Singapore n from the room u can see the marina bay area thru a window wall. Just the opposite side of the hotel u can get local food at a unique outdoor food court by the bay or u can enjoy some drinks at small pubs/ bars in the Esplanade. It takes just a few minutes to hit orchard road for shopping.
Breakfast was great n there is a big area for sitting outside (u won't like the air cond in sin trust me)

This is my tenth visit to the Mandarin Oriental hotel in Singapore and, like every other trip, the experience has been top-notch. The rooms are very good - not huge, but very nicely appointed. Best rooms are those that face the city (with views of the Marina Bay Sands hotel) or over the pool toward the sea (which I have this trip). The views are unobstructed so any floor is good. The best part of the hotel is the staff - incredibly helpful, somehow know my name at every contact point, and perfect service. Morton's Bar is fun (go for happy hour and try the filet sandwiches), Melt has a very good breakfast (to support the views of other commenters, it's not cheap), and the lounge facing the city has good music on the weekends. Is this the best hotel in Singapore? Probably not. But is it the best in this price range (and I've stayed in a number of other hotels in this range), yes.

Room Tip: All rooms are good - it depends on which view you like. You have 3 choices - city view (over the ba...

This hotel is an old classic. Still it is like an average Holiday Inn with true 5-star service.
The rooms are rather worn down, the front doors are of American quality, i.e. they do not insulate against sound at all. Most annoying. There are obvious traces of old fittings in the bathrooms. There are very few decorations in the rooms and the hotel in general.
Having a suite, the light switches was quite a bit of a mystery to figure out!
The AC could barely cope even at maximum thrust.

The hotel effectively lacks a reception area. Not good.

The crowded breakfast room was well run, (never mind some of the 'managers') by a plentiful of staff. Given that you are willing to run back and forth many times, there are many choices. Had the fruit bar served freshly sliced mango (like in a 5-star Bangkok hotel) there would have been a stampede. Plates can be hard to find.

The Dolce Vita restaurant by the outside pool is an excellent and very romantic choice in the evening. It also has a reasonably OK wine menu. The staff is almost too attentive as all of them try to assist you, but few know what you actually wanted and when you ordered or got it.

The service in the otherwise not so thrilling Axis bar is 1st class. I wish I could have packed one particular staff person into my luggage to work in one of my own restaurants back home!

The concierge desk is 1st class.

The hotel has a 'surprisingly' high number of guests with small children...

Prices: 10-15% above what you pay down-town. Hence no big deal as the service and quality is so good.

Singapore likely has the best service you can get on the planet in combination with 4-star food quality. This is why you should go to Singapore. You pay the same price as at home, but you pay with a smile. No big ego's around. You can go to Japan for equally good service, but they will not understand your English.

Room Tip: High floor - and not 'city view'. Otherwise you will be listening to the road-hogs speeding...

I stayed here for several nights while in Singapore for some business meetings. I arrived from the US at around 1 a.m., and even at that time, the bellman and front desk staff were pleasant and professional. The room was really comfortable and quiet and as I looked out the window, I was completely taken with the view of the CBD across Marina Bay, and also the new Marina Bay Sands resort, hanging there like a giant Starship Enterprise. In the morning, I learned that I could also look right down on the Merlion at the entrance to the river.

Got up the next morning, having had a great night's sleep in the very quiet room and comfortable bed. I went down to the hotel breakfast buffet. It was great, but REALLY expensive. You might want to ask how much it is before you decide to eat there. I learned the next day that there's a mall you can access as you go out the front of the hotel and to your right... if you can get in there after 8 a.m., some of the mall restaurants (including a Starbucks) are open.

I found the hotel to be a quick cab ride from most of the commercial areas in Singapore, although since Raffle's Ave is a one-way, getting back to the hotel can often be several dollars more expensive than your outbound ride.

I'm a runner, and I found that there was a great 2 mile loop around the Marina, and you can add some distance by running up along the river. Lots of wide paths. Just go early before it gets too hot.

Room Tip: If you can get a room with a view of Marina Bay, you won't be disappointed.
