Owner description: Find out why water is the precious lifeblood of our small country and see how Singapore’s waterways interact at the NEWater Visitor Centre.
Reviewed 13 July 2016

NEWater is the brand name given to reclaimed water produced by Singapore's Public Utilities Board. It is treated wastewater (sewage- they call it as used water) that has been purified using dual-membrane (via microfiltration and reverse osmosis) and ultraviolet technologies, in addition to conventional water treatment processes concept developed by CH2M Hill. Treated water is supplied to industries located in Singapore. About 30% of water demand is being met by NEWATER. This place is very useful not only to students but also for general public who should know how technology has advanced in the field of water reuse. The admission to this place was free. There was guided tour by the staff there who explains each and every aspect of the facility, Centre host fun activities and experiments that help students learn about reverse osmosis and other NEWater processes. At the end we were given the packaged water bottle containing the NEWater. It was a fun cum education tour.

I am a fan of Singapore. Its amazingly that such a small country can be on top in many domains. One is certainly water processing.
In "newater visiting centre" you can see how they make of used water (they wont call it waste water) new water of excellent quality.
So Singaporians have one bottle which they re-use and fill with tapwater .They dont waste water and they dont waste money by buying 'plastic water'.Clever people, clever country, excellent government based on the ideas of late mr Lee .

The visit is free and it is very informative and educational. I learnt few basic facts on NEWater:

One third of Singapore water needs is fulfilled with the help of Newater Technology. There are four Newater plants in Singapore and one of the processes include running the NEWater through ultraviolet light at 800 degree Celsius in one second to kill the bacteria and germs. And as a result of the ultraviolet heat treatment, the water become a bit of acidic and minute amount of sodium hydroxide is added to the water to neutralize the acidity. The NEWater contains little minerals and as such, most of the NEWater are for industrial usage. The tap water for our domestic consumption come from reservoir source and contain the essential minerals needed for our body.

The guide explained in simple layman terms and used models to illustrate her points. We found the presentation interesting.

Together with our group were about 80 primary school students from Hong Kong. The foreign visitors seem keen to understand NEWater technology. I wondered if one day Hong Kong will face the same dilemma when China suddenly cut off water supplies to them just as Malaysia threatened to do so to Singapore few years back?

I also like to share some of my experience in organizing this visit for my residents.

First, you need to book a date for your visit online. Just perform a google search by keying NEWater visitor centerr booking and the online booking website will appear. Select the date you want and fill up the necessary information of the applicant and submit the booking online. Guided tour is provided free when your online booking is confirmed. The Mandarin session is only available at certain slot and you could choose the Mandarin slot if your residents prefer the guided tour to be conducted in Mandarin.

The maximum no. of visitors for each confirmed slot of guided tour is 120. If your visiting date falls on a weekend, it is advisable that you book it early. I book a slot early for 40 residents and it was approved within one or two days. Subsequently, when another batch of residents decided to join us, I could not secure another 40 residents for the same slot as it was already taken up by other visitors. I have no other choice but to book for a later time slot for the same day. This means that my residents were divided into two buses due to the different scheduled time slots.

Second, be there 15 minutes early. The guided tour starts punctually and would not wait for latecomers. Our first bus of residents arrived at the visitor center late and they missed the first part of the video presentation. In planning the visit, you need to factor in the time for the bus to travel from your assembly venue to the visitor center. The bus driver may need to take more than half an hour to reach the destination if your assembly venue is at the western part of Singapore. Please also ensure that your driver knows the way so that time is saved on hunting for the visitor center.

If you are early, there is an exhibition room below the counter of the visitor center and you can spend your time looking at the exhibition panels or free to use the toilets beside the exhibition room. From the exhibition room, there is a staircase that leads to the reception counter above which is the start of the guided tour.

Third, bear in mind the duration of the guided tour would take about an hour or more. We started our tour at about 10.45 am and by the time we came out from the NEWater plant, it was about 12 noon. There is an introductory video at the start, followed by the gallery visit and the factory tour. Let your driver knows so that he is mentally prepared.

Fourth, be psychological prepared to stand or sit on the floor throughout the tour. The only minus point for the visit is that there is no bench or seat available for visitors except at the first video viewing room. So, for the one hour or so, the visitors in particularly the senior citizens must bear with it to stand throughout the presentation and tour. You can, however, sit on the floor if you are real physically tired.

Overall, I am glad and impressed with the visit and would like to take this opportunity to thank the organization (PUB) for providing the free guided tour. It was indeed an educational and informative insight into the development of NEWater technology in solving our water problem. An achievement we are proud.

Singapore has two major limitations -- land and clean water. The tour at this visitor centre shows how Singaopre is tackling the problem of having enough clean water for a growing population.

The tour is designed for school groups, but as an adult I actually found it quite interesting. You'll learn about the four "taps" of water (rain, water imports from Malaysia, desalination, recycling) and how recycled NEWater is produced.

Rather than trying to encourage citizens to drink recycled water, it is used for industry and for topping-up reservoirs. The tour explains how water is recycled and you'll see some of the equipment being used. There are also interactive displays to keep children attentive.

The visitor centre is located close to the airport and is a fair walk from the closest MTR (train), so a taxi is recommended.

We found the free tour quite worthwhile, as a way of learning more about Singapore's particular situation in the world.

The water treatment scheme of Singapore is amazing! A visit to the center lets you learn about it, through an interactive way, in a guided tour. The tour is very professional, and the exhibition is great.
I really enjoyed learning of about the water treatment in Singapore - what was also nice, that it was raining that day, so a great indoor activity.
