My favorite hideaway in Singapore

5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 15 Aug 2012
Ali´s Nest is a lovely home-stay for people that like to meet other backpackers and people that like to enjoy little India and the lovely food and atmosphere that comes with it.

I first meet Ali in 1999 the first time i stayed there, at that time i was a backpacker. Now i could stay in a more fancy hotel but i still like to go back there and chill with old friends and new ones!

We were recommended this place from travellers planet in Melaka. It was the cheapest in Singapore that we found and a great little place to stay. It's a homestay and the guy is really friendly. Good atmosphere and a brilliant location in little India, so much yummy food around. The other guests were all chilled and friendly too, I think it attracts like minded people. There are plenty of bathrooms and they are clean, kitchen/lounge has books and stuff to read. They play classical music all day which is actually really relaxing. We will come back here!

Me and my boyfriend stayed in this hostel, Alis Nest, for four nights. The feeling there was so nice and relaxed and the price so nice compared to other hostels in Singapore. Alis Nest is situated in Little India and very close to everything you need. We loved SIngapore and we loved Alis Nest. We almost felt like home thanks to the warm atmosphere and the welcoming feeling at Ali´s. The place is simpel but everything was working perfectly fine. We really liked the big kitchen and the possibility to make our own breakfast. I give my very best recommendations.

Why do I (and many others) keep returning to stay at Ali's Nest, time & time again as we pass through Singapore? Many good reasons why I stayed there several times this year (and last year, and the year before that . . .). Its location in Little India is a perfect stone's throw from Farrer Park MRT Exit E, a short walk across the road to Mustafa's 24/7 department store, it's surrounded by more eating houses than you can count, the family atmosphere is friendly, safe, relaxed & easy-going, the people you meet here (over the kicthen-table) are (predominantly) down-to-earth, and other than Ali's Nest, there's very few places in Singapore these days that offer such an affordable backpacker-bed-rate. As an added bonus, it even has (clean) hot-water showers that work, and (clean) modern-day toilets that flush! What more could a traditional backpacker wish for?

Nowadays, its often heard that Singapore is "that sterile place" with very little of its traditional character remaining. Many of its hostels now cater to new-age flash-packers, who seek Hilton-style facilties at rock-bottom prices, who then complain when they find a few cracks in the paint or a book-shelf that's not been catelogued correctly.

Ali's Nest is a traditonal chinese-style family-homestay. Take it or leave it. So if that style doesn't suit your sensibilities, then best you leave it, rather than complain that its not in keeping with your own personal expectations.

This place was great value for money - Ali is a friendly and welcoming host and the place has an excellent location, right by the MRT. The air con is a bit noisy - they could do with sorting that out. But the bathrooms are spotless and there is always tea, coffee and toast in the morning. All in all, for the cheapest room we could find in Singapore we were pretty pleased.

My girlfriend and I have been traveling aound S.E Asia for four months staying almost entirely in budget priced guesthouses and hostels through Malaysia, Loas,Veitnam, Cambodia and finaly Singapore and of all the places we stayed at, some were in very poor countries with the most basic of facilities but when compared to this hostel they were the Hilton! We find it hard to believe that in a first world country and city such as this that this kind of standard can be tolerated. Ali's Nest was by far the dirtiest, noisyiest, most disorganised and most unsafe kip we've ever stayed at. So NO! I would seriously recommend you find anywhere else to stay when visiting Singapore.
