The Phoenix Hotel Yogyakarta - MGallery Collection
Ranked #6 of 212 Hotels in Yogyakarta
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 19 April 2012

The Phoenix Hotel is an elegant place to stay in Yogyakarta. The public areas are imaginatively decorated and the colonial ambience makes this a really interesting hotel. Not that it is old and fusty - it's a modern decoration using the old features and fittings.

We arrived very early from a flight from Bali - but a room was ready for us at 7:30 am which was good and we told we had been upgraded. However the room we got was on the far side of the hotel in one of the newer parts and had a view of a petrol station. It was however perfectly comfortable and had the first bathroom that worked of our visit to Indonesia. If you can get a room facing inward around the pool then go for it.

Breakfast was a good standard buffet - with some nice Indonesian touches - a lady who prepared local delicacies and offered medicinal Javanese drinks was an attraction. Service was good and efficient although the hotel was pretty busy and was hosting a local business group - standards of service did not slip.

Some of the uniforms of the staff are quirky and amusing. The girl in the business centre was very helpful and there is free wifi throughout the hotel which was efficient.

Perhaps my review is influenced by the fact that this was a higher standard of hotel than the ones we had previously been staying in on our Indonesia trip, but reading some earlier reviews they sound to be picky. There was a notice about the upcoming re-painting but it did not affect us.

The location is a little way away from the main drag of Malioboro and the road is not easy to cross though hotel staff will assist you by stopping the traffic with whistles (a common practice in Indonesia) but it is not really too much out of the way.

I got a price of US$105 per night with breakfast. Try to get a hotel in London, Hong Kong, or New York of this standard at this price. Loved it.

Room Tip: The best rooms are those facing inwards around the pool area.

Started poorly, I was given a smoking room facing a petrol station even though I had requested non-smoking and the description of the deluxe room was for "city"/pool view with balcony. On top of that, they were renovating and there was a bucket of paint on my balcony and the bamboo scaffolding was right in front of my balcony. To their credit, when I asked for this to be corrected they did so straight away. Subsequently the stay was nice enough. They do try to go out of their way to help but I found the breakfast spread average and the umbrella they lent me was broken. I was only there for a night so didn't bother changing hotels but if I was staying there longer I would have definitely considered.

Room Tip: Ask for a pool view if available. The other 'deluxe' rooms with balcony with 'city'...

The staff was absolutely charming, they met every request with a bright smile...and they still have a ways to go before I would give this establishment a 5 star rating.

Room was small, but adequate - nice little balcony. Bathroom linens could use a refresh.

Turn-down service with chocolate is a nice touch, as is the complimentary candies.

The restaurant never was able to satisfy us - they were always out of something we wanted, or gave us nearly what we asked for. The food quality is good, not great...the staff made up for clumsy service with their graciousness.

This is a good hotel if you'd like a Western style place for your trip to Yogyakarta. The hotel grounds are quite charming and well kept. Good value for money, especially for Accor members that get a discount on F&B.

We enjoyed the singers in the hotel bar - better than expected.

Upon entering the Phoenix hotel we were impressed by the wonderful colonial style of the hotel. Check in was done quickly and efficiently. However, we were unpleasantly surprised when we entered our room and found that the "City view" consisted of just a roof. Although reception handled our complaint quickly and we could move to the room on the opposite side of the hallway within 15 minutes , moving rooms is not what you're waiting for after being on a train from Jakarta for 7 hours.
The Superior rooms in the Phoenix are clean, comfortable and quiet, but not too big and relatively expensive.
The restaurant serves great breakfast and lunch with a lot of choice.
To get to Malioboro is a bit of walk, but it's a great experience to take a becak to go there. They will take you from the hotel to there in about 10 to 15 minutes.

This hotel was booked out so we went there only for dinner. I would have been happy staying there. It is a large colonial hotel (like a mini Metropole from Hanoi). The iconic photo is looking from the back to the front through a staircase. to the left are the main dining room and the bar. Behind is an open courtyard with a fountain with some Indonesian boutiue shops. The food and service were excellent. A great way to step into the other world for a while!
