The Phoenix Hotel is an elegant place to stay in Yogyakarta. The public areas are imaginatively decorated and the colonial ambience makes this a really interesting hotel. Not that it is old and fusty - it's a modern decoration using the old features and fittings.
We arrived very early from a flight from Bali - but a room was ready for us at 7:30 am which was good and we told we had been upgraded. However the room we got was on the far side of the hotel in one of the newer parts and had a view of a petrol station. It was however perfectly comfortable and had the first bathroom that worked of our visit to Indonesia. If you can get a room facing inward around the pool then go for it.
Breakfast was a good standard buffet - with some nice Indonesian touches - a lady who prepared local delicacies and offered medicinal Javanese drinks was an attraction. Service was good and efficient although the hotel was pretty busy and was hosting a local business group - standards of service did not slip.
Some of the uniforms of the staff are quirky and amusing. The girl in the business centre was very helpful and there is free wifi throughout the hotel which was efficient.
Perhaps my review is influenced by the fact that this was a higher standard of hotel than the ones we had previously been staying in on our Indonesia trip, but reading some earlier reviews they sound to be picky. There was a notice about the upcoming re-painting but it did not affect us.
The location is a little way away from the main drag of Malioboro and the road is not easy to cross though hotel staff will assist you by stopping the traffic with whistles (a common practice in Indonesia) but it is not really too much out of the way.
I got a price of US$105 per night with breakfast. Try to get a hotel in London, Hong Kong, or New York of this standard at this price. Loved it.
