A great hotel and base from which to explore Jogja and begin trips to the Prambanan and Borobudur temples. The service was great and the hotel very attractive. The rooms were very clean and modern but cosy with very comfortable beds and plate-sized shower heads in the bathroom. The nice pool and spa area is perfect for winding down after a humid day-trip and you can be pretty confident in the food they serve up. Breakfast is very nice. Our room did not come with pool view but with views of nearby buildings, but as we were there to use it as a base for exploring this was not a problem. However, we could see the Merapi volcano looming large from our window which was nice. I highly recommend this hotel, particularly if you'll be mixing up the types of accommodation you take during your trip to Indonesia. By the time I arrived in Jogja I was feeling pretty ill and this hotel provided some good respite from any hassles and stresses.

Room Tip: If a pleasant view is important go for a pool view room.

I stayed at the Phoenix for five nights and found it to be a well run, nice hotel. It's historic and quite charming. The balconies are very nice (request a room with a balcony facing outside of the hotel instead of the pool or courtyard). The rooms are clean, but small and basic. It's not a great place if you want to be able to relax in your room because they are so small. Good for business travelers and walking distance from the main areas to visit (walk down Malioboro to buy Batik (Mirota Batik) and see the Kraton (only open until 1:30 pm so go early)). There's not much food around the hotel itself other than a nice Indonesian restaurant called Tiga Nonya is across the street (very good) but otherwise you need to take a taxi. We took a taxi to R & B Grill for dinner one night and highly recommend it. Good value.

The guide rates for car bookings are inflated if you book through the hotel. I booked our car for tours through one of the travel agents on the nearby Malioboro and the price was a much better value. About 400,000 for 12 hours. Other friends we knew negotiated down to 300,000 for 12 hours.

Room Tip: Request a balcony facing outside of hotel.

This legenderay hotel was initially built as private estate in 1918. Through the ensuing decades, the property changed hands a number of times, until a Dutch caretaker turned it into Pensioner Hotel. The legendary Malioboro Street is just nearby, while the world herigate Borobudur and Prambanan temples are only an hour drive. Yogyakarta's cultural heritage and picturesque settings emit a distinctive charm that seldom fails its visitors. The 144 beautifully appointed rooms are reflecting the ambiance of bygone era wrapped in modern comfort facilities, enabling its occupant to celebrate a glorious past without losing the beauty of contemporary living. ... more   less
