Owner description: This spectacular multimedia show, combining lights, music and narration involves 19 key buildings on Hong Kong Island. The facades of skyscrapers are decked out in lights that, at the flick of a switch, glow in a myriad of colours depicting Hong Kong’s colourful and bustling atmosphere.

“Disappointing!!!”
Reviewed 3 September 2012

We have read a lot about the Symphony of lights before going to HK and it was said as a must see event. We reached the Kowloon waterfront before 7 and were waiting there till 8 just to see the the show which is in the Guinness book of world records. As were there on a wednesday, the narration was in English. The show was total disappointment for all of us. The music was so pathetic. The light show was not at all interesting. The Hong Kong island is so beautiful to see from there with all buildings lit up. If you are there at the time of the show it is fine, but it is not worth it going there and waiting for the show. Just go the the waterfront, enjoy the scenes and come back. In short the light show was a total waste of time.

“Over-hyped attraction in Hong Kong”
Reviewed 3 September 2012

Images of the Symphony of Lights on the Discover Hong Kong Website, HK travel guides and tourist information can be a real oversell for what you actually see when watching this 10 minute program at Victoria Harbour. In short, you are not going to see the beautiful images with dozens of laser lights evenly positioned over harbour, shooting into the sky at the same time - the image commonly used to promote the Symphony of Lights (just look at the Discover Hong Kong Website). You won't see this scene because it doesn't actually happen. Yikes!

As the Symphony of Lights is a free show, you can't really scream 'false advertising'. However, many visitors do leave after the show feeling rather under-whelmed and many just flat down disappointed as the show falls far short of the high expectations they have built for it. Unfortunately, this has been the reaction of quite a few of our guests, after seeing Symphony of Lights for the first time.

Overall, we have always felt the Symphony of Lights was an over-hyped attraction in Hong Kong. Promoted as an amazing multimedia entertainment experience over the world-class Victoria Harbour. Instead it should be solely billed as a short, interesting laser light show that you can watch if you happen to be on the Avenue of Stars at 8pm in the evening. If these are your only expectations of the Symphony of Lights, you probably wont be disappointed. However, if you are scheduling your entire evening around being at the Avenue of for this show, you are very likely to be quite disappointed in what you see. This is simply not a feature (must-see) attraction in Hong Kong and it actually quite pales compared to some of the truly great attractions and experiences you can have here.

“Find a good position and listen to the music”
Reviewed 1 September 2012

There are lots of spots that you can view this light show from. Harbourside in TST seems to be a popular option.

We chose the comfort of the Sky Lounge at the Sheraton on Nathan Rd, but there are plenty of ground level options also.

Wherever you go, make sure you are in position early so you can appreciate the skyline before the show starts - it is still a sea of colour and action. You should also be somewhere that is playing the accompanying music.

It is enjoyable to see the skyline transform, and if you're lucky you might get a clear evening. We saw it twice - once on a smoggy night and once on a clear night - the searchlights in particular had a different effect on the clear night.

“Free entertainment in HK.”
Reviewed 26 August 2012

A piece of free entertainment can't be sniffed at in this expensive city. Get a spot near the water in Tsim Sha Tsui. Show starts at 8pm and lasts for 15minutes or so. Need a video camera to capture it at its best.

“maybe i went on the wrong night”
Reviewed 26 August 2012

Went to the expo pier which seems to be one of the best spots as you get a good view of the island and the mainland, and you hear the music as well. Most of the action happens on the mainland and is mostly spotlights, with a few lasers and building lights. Went on a Saturday night and the best building - the bank of China (the one with the triangles) didn't have it's lights on at all - so probably a weekend thing. The searchlights will make better photos of the impressive skyline but don't expect much and the music is not in sync.
