“Visit the Big Buddha here”
Reviewed 5 March 2012

If you can, get on an organised tour to see the Big Buddha on Lantau Island. I say that because it will be the easiest way for you to navigate all the crowds wanting to travel up to the Big Buddha on the cable way - there can often be lots of people waiting and a tour group will go before the rest of the public. The Big Buddha is great to see - and there is a beautiful monastery at the foot of the Buddha where you can get some lovely food. It's a very nice day out.

“A grand day out”
Reviewed 5 March 2012

To get there there are a few options, tung chung then bus/cab, cable car from tung chung to po lin monestery or take a ferry from central piers to mui wo. No matter the choice there is lots to do here, tour the monestary, walk up lantau/sunset peaks, try one of the many trails across the island. To a trip to the old stilted fishing village of tai o or just enjoy cheung sha beach where you can get some good food a sun tan and well chilled out. An alternative is the walk from mui wo over to discovery bay or vice versa. Both spots have regular ferries back to central.

“Big Buddha”

Definitely worth a visit when in HK... Avoid the cable car when it's misty though, you sadly won't see a thing.

“A Different Hong Kong”
Reviewed 4 March 2012

Lantau island is lovely. As well as Nong Ping and the Big Buddha there is the stilt village at Tai O where you can see a traditional way of life and see the Chinese white dolphins on a boat trip while they are still here. There are the most beautiful beaches at Cheung Sha, Pui O and Mui Wo and you can enjoy an alfresco lunch at one of the restaurants on the beach whilst taking in the most wonderful views.

South Lantau is a National Park and there are the most wonderful walks and hikes. The paths are well marked and there are plenty of toilets en route.

Don't just get off the ferry at Mui Wo and get on the bus to Nong Ping. Enjoy South Lantau it is truely a beautiful place.
