An authentic sampan tour of the renowned floating village of Aberdeen provides a first hand view of Hong Kong's severe income disparity, and a memorable experience. Although still a working fishing village it has been engulfed by commercial towers and factories.
Piloted by elderly folks who may actual live on board this sampan you will zig-zag among the world's largest floating restaurant, world class yachts, and an eclectic jumble of poor fishing boats, houseboats, and sampans for a closer view of the way of living in this fishing village.

It was cool to get in a sampan, but there was a lot of exhaust fumes. The Jumbo restaurant is a main attraction as well as the fishing village. There were a few high end yachts mooring right next boats that looked like thet were about to sink. The boat ride what short and didn't include an English speaking guide, but the lady did point out some interesting spots for photos.

My two sons and I went to the Aberdeen fishing village with Splendid Tours. We had a 20 minute Sampan ride piloted by an elderly man. The boat went around other boats including house boats and two large floating restaurants including the Jumbo restaurant which, according to our tour guide, has a 2300 capacity and serves 8 course meals. There were even dogs on one houseboat which gives an idea how the boat people lived. There were also quite a few yachts but most were covered and I assume the owners were away. Without a tour guide, this could be boring as the boats look old and shabby but the tour made the difference.

Had heard so much about must do Sampan ride in Hongkong that even though we saw the old boats taking people on an unimpressive ride, we decided to give it a try. Bought tickets from the Aberdeen promenade and hopped on one if the Sampan boats. It was being operated by an elderly woman. She just took us on a slow ride circling several boats and yachts parked in the waters and a ride past Jumbo Kingdom restaurant. The whole thing took around 20 min and all that we saw from the boat could be seen from the promenade also. Can avoid

This fishing village comprises a higgly-piggly jumble of floating house-boats and fishing vessels. It is fascinating to watch the people on board living out their lives and earning their livelihoods. Should be a must for first-time visitors.
