Be aware of the shark porters who tried to get us to book highly priced attractions through them for 2-3 times the price you can buy direct. Also, they appear to get a cut from the Cab drivers outside, we were quoted 800RMB for a return trip to the great wall. Cost us a grand total of 90RMB by bus. Finally, ensure you do not accept any tea/drinks in the restaurant. We were charged 48RMB each for one glass of tea.

Room tip: Ensure you turn the fridge off. It makes the room unbearably hot.

My travel agent had pre-booked this Hotel for me before I left NZ. Upon arrival, I was told that they would have to upgrade me to another room as the room I had booked was unavailable. I was happy with that (no extra cost), however, the room I was given was what I had expected initially. Yes, the rooms are dated but I had the basics, bed, TV, bathroom & the room was serviced daily, happy with that.
Breakfast was a good selection of Chinese or european food. I found the staff extremely helpful & efficient. Most spoke english & could tell you the bus numbers to get to where you wanted to go. If they couldn't answer a question they would always get back to you later with an answer. I would definitely stay here again.

First impressions of this place was. 'They over book foreigners and put in chinese people ahead. so we got moved to a hotel around the corner for the first night, which was just as bad because they kicked us out of both of the resturants. When we finally got back to the redwall. the hall ways spelt of smoke. We never got a chance to try the Chinese resturant because when we tried they had an over priced buffet on. we ate mostly in the western resturant and that food wasnt that great either. The location is only good for when you finish at the forbidden city its right there, to catch a train its a half an hour walk away. Staff didnt speek much english either. past the glass frontage, this is a very dated looking hotel. Miss

The Red Wall Hotel is very well located being close to a number of attractions that you could walk to. The glass facade makes it look very modern, but much of the hotel looks dated. The lobby is smaller when compared to a major hotel, but it had a number of facilities, including a multi-phone charger. The staff were friendly and helpful. The dining room was large enough with breakfast a mix of Chinese and European. There were some private dining rooms and part of the floor was glass/perspex over stones. The hotel lacked a coherent layout and floor levels were joined by a ramp. The room we had was a bedroom with an office which had been requested. The office had ample space with chairs, a sofa and a table. It also had a small fridge and a safe. There was also an electric kettle with a glass jug for the boiled water for drinking and tea and coffee were supplied each day. The bedroom was a bit cramped with a large bed and in one corner was a large TV placed on a table. This made getting out of bed in the middle of the night somewhat tricky. The bed, like most Chinese beds was quite firm. The bathroom was small with a glass/perspex basin and vanity top and the spring plug was unable to keep water in the basin. The shower was over a bath and the grouting around the bath ensured a pool of water on the floor after every shower. The water was hot and reliable. Staff servicing of the room did not include providing toilet paper and on three separate occasions, toilet paper had to be requested. The towels were somewhat thin, but were replaced each day. The room smelt of smoke and a new room was found. However, the new room had no reading lights and a bright light outside the window which would have made sleeping somewhat difficult and the opportunity to shift was rejected. The new room offered was in a more modern part of the hotel and a number of rooms were more modern than the dated decor of the room we occupied. It has to be said that you could pay a great deal more for a hotel in Beijing and get just the same as this hotel.

Room tip: It is worth inspecting rooms to check that you have a room in the more modern part of the hotel. NB: for Trip Advisor. Swimming pool was inadvertantly ticked, but it will not allow me to untick it. The hotel did not have a swimming pool as far as I know.

I have been to worse hotels in China, but I usually spend about 60 rmb per night for the experience that my friends and I got at the Red Wall Hotel. The location is good. All praise stops here. I have been to 42 cities in China and this has got to be the most expensive hotel in the nation for what you get. Nothing has had a makeover, (or been cleaned) since Mao held office just down the road. The rooms are stained, bathrooms are out of a horror film, the food is terrible and the beers in the Lobby cost the equivalent of 10 US dollars, about the same as the Hyatt. This is not the Hyatt. The service, although friendly is comically slow and incompetent. To check in to our terrible rooms and rent outrageously expensive bikes took about an hour. My friends have often told me what an amazing trip China was and how it might be the best, most enlightening trip of their lives. Unfortunately our stay at the Red Wall rated as the worst experience on an otherwise incredibly trip.

Room tip: We saw many rooms ranging from 600-1000 rmb per night. I would not pay more than 100rmb for any of them.
