“Great Experience”
Reviewed 14 March 2012

We had a private Cooking session, where we had the perfect mix between information, watching the chef cook and hands on experience. This is the best and most authentic cooking experience I have had.

“Wow, Delicious, Cozy, Fun, Hard to Find”
Reviewed 24 February 2012

Worth searching for, it is the first doorway after the Login Bar, seriously. Dark and twisty, but if you enter the dark doorway, turn left then right, then right and then left and you will see it on your right. The ambience is terrific. One bright room -in the Kitchen, we were in a cozier, warmer ante-room. Room for 12 in the kitchen and 8 in our room. Our 13 yr. old "really liked the food." Each dish is as interesting as the one before and the food just keeps coming. Don't take more than 2 or 3 of each course or you'll never make it to the end! We arrived at 7 and left at 9:30, nice amount of time for us, but little ones would find it a long meal. They might like watching the chef, though.
the exchange rate was 6.25 yuan to $1 US, 300 yuan dinner was about $50/each, including drinks. Worth it for adults, more food than our 13 year old could eat.
A great experience.

“excellent experience !!”
Reviewed 10 September 2011

The restaurant is a little hard to find as it is located in the backyard in a traditional hutong in central Beijing. But once there very good - almost gourmet level - chinses dishes were prepared right in front of the table where we were sitting on high chairs.
The staff was smiling and did all to make sure we enjoyed our evening, and certainly not going cheap on beer nor wine. A truly remarkable experience and all for a very reasonalbe price of RMB 300 per person. Will surely come back ! By the way - reservations is a must.

“Hidden in the Hutongs, a Chinese Culinary Gem!”
Reviewed 26 March 2011

We recently visited Black Sesame Kitchen for a vegetarian cooking class, and had a fantastic experience. For four hours, we cooked, learned and ate with Candice, a kind, helpful and funny chaperone through our cooking journey, and the head chef, Chef Zhang (who just returned a week earlier from his first trip to the states, where he had been invited to train some of the leading chefs in America on Chinese cuisine). Although we are avid fans of Chinese cuisine, we had never been to a Chinese cooking class, and this far exceeded our expectations. The meal was delicious: the cold Tofu salad, Bamboo shoots and Chinese mushrooms, twice-cooked tofu, and traditional tomato and egg stir fry - the meal was one of our best in China! Candice taught us so much, and her thorough explanation of what a Chinese pantry contains gave us a great foundation for our culinary odyssey. We were only in Beijing for two days, yet this was a high priority stop. Included in the cooking class were beautiful aprons, and some traditional Szechwan peppercorn to take home. Candice was also very helpful in recommending local attractions, restaurants, and shopping (especially in the culinary department). I highly recommend Black Sesame Kitchen!
