Owner description: Beijing Sideways provides you with a sideways look of China, Beijing and its surrounding.Aboard our vintage sidecar motorbike, we show the Beijing we love, without the crowds. This form of transportation allows us to be very flexible with our exploration, stopping easily whenever necessary, a very close proximity with the city and countryside where you can «almost touch» anything you see, but above all it’s a sightseeing wonder! Did we mention it’s extremely fun?

The best tour ever. Been on many around the world and this was the best yet. Fabulous fun. I was tentative, but my husband was right, it was the only way to see The Great Wall. The trip out was fast, cold and with a minor breakdown. That worked out rather good, as it gave us a chance to get to know our guides. A stopoff at the Temples was lovely... Silence, only the sound of the wind in the trees. We arrived via a wee village and then the hard work began. Up and up and up.... The views were amazing. Not another human soul in sight. The wall is steep and it is a bit of a difficult climb, but worth every bit of the climb. Lunch was a bit blustery with high winds, but a glass of wine and a beautiful lunch cooked by Ricardo was just what was needed. The climb down was a bit steep, but a few laughs along the way. A fantastic and unforgettable day. Unbelievable to have walked the wall with just two guides and ourselves. In fact, I think it his tour should be kept a big secret. Thanks for the champagne Yves, it was enjoyed whilst we warmed up. Couldn't keep the smiles off our faces for two days!!!
Grazie.... Wonderful memories.

As an expat living in Beijing for a while, I have been a few times on the Great Wall. However I decided to try the Beijing Sideways trip, based on a friend's advice, and this way celebrate Spring finally coming back.
We met (on time) in Beijing where Ricardo and his drivers were waiting for us on vintage side-cars. Coffee, and then we started our journey to the Great Wall. We got quickly outside of the city, heading North to the mountains. Just this trip, which I already know, was completely different when seating in a side-car! Felt as in an old movie. Fits perfectly with China : a constant contrast of modern and old-school...
Each customer was sitting in a side-car, driven by Ricardo or a chinese driver. Despite the cold morning, it was conffy, since Riccardo had some extra warm coats for us.
Once in the mountains, we first visited a temple never heard about.
Later on, we reached a wild portion of the Great Wall that I didnt know, No tourists. Just us. While we started walking on it, Riccardo was giving us explanation about so many things... Great Wall, China... And... finally, we stopped for lunch, on the Great Wall, under the spring sun.
This lunch was just so unexpected and full of surprise. Riccardo had a camping stove, and started cooking for us! Delicious, warm italian food, we had pasta with sauce, pork tenderloin, wine, desert, and even a home-made Limoncello!!! On the great wall. in China...This was great.
Later on we were back on walking on the Great Wall. Nor too easy, nor too hard to walk on, it was wild, nobody else than us, with a wonderfull landscape.
Finally we reached the other side of the mountain, where the other drivers had brought the side-cars while we were walking. So we didnt have to go back on our steps.
Back on our way to Beijing, apparently we had some time left, Ricardo brought us to the Birdnest.
This was a great day, and I did already recommend it to other expats here, since it brings a complete fresh, fun and original experience to attraction in Beijing.

The wife and I took the 4 hour trip of Beijing, and opted for two bikes. Yves picked us up in front of the hotel promptly in the morning, and we mapped out the itinerary, based on what we wanted to see - with input and suggestions from the Sideways team.

The trip was fabulous, with them showing us the major sites, as well as taking us off the beaten track. The team was very knowledgeable of the places we visited, and of Chinese culture and history. Yves, who is French, spoke perfect English, as well as Chinese, the co-driver was Chinese, and we had the added bonus of them bringing along a trainee, who was also very knowledgeable of Beijing.

Exploring Beijing on a motorbike is very economical, as you do not spend time in traffic, and you experience the sights, sounds and smells first hand. My wife was a bit apprehensive beforehand, but the Sideways team are competent drivers who know their way around Beijing traffic, and are very safe. We did experience a very amusing incident, when a Chinese man on a scooter "bumped" into one of the bikes, and promptly explained that it was not his fault as his scooter had no breaks :)

The locals also seem very interested in the bikes, and we did get a lot of attention, with people gathering around when we stopped, waiving and smiling when driving through the tight streets, and a general positive vibe all around.

The only thing I can fault, is the exhaust. These bikes are the real thing, and they do spew out a lot of poison, and being on the second bike for 4 hours means you breath in a lot of carbon monoxide from the first bike, and you can end up with a slight headache if not careful to take plenty of breaks.

Definitely recommend. Great way to experience Beijing.
