We came here as part of a city tour of Mombasa and it was probably a highlight of our trip. Our guide explained it was a co operative and that all the people that did their wood carvings were not allowed to sell directly, but through the organisation. 5% of the earnings are donated to orphanages.

We bought a few wood carvings here. Although readily available throughout the trip, this was definitely the place we felt most comfortable as we were able to peruse without being hassled and pick out the pieces that we truly wanted. They are fixed prices, but more than reasonable.

A great experience, a little compound were the akamba people carve beautiful wooden sculptures. My husband and I went without our children and bought a couple of sculpture. We liked it so much we had to go back with our children, they had a great time.

This Cultural activity of the Akamba (Bantu) people epitomise the unique adventures of these long-distance traders, capturing Kenya's heritage. You can never miss a souvenir to take home, at quite pocket-friendly prices. A life-size Giraffe carving is a favourite, shipped right to your home if you wish!

Akamba Handcraft is a wood carving co operative with about 2,800 active Members and more than 7000 non members.

When visiting you can walk through the grounds and see them actually doing the carvings and take photos etc. After you can visit the shop where you can buy the finished products. Each worker is assigned a number and he is paid when an item is sold hence every item in the shop has a number.
The workers are apparently not allowed to sell anything except through the showroom or they will be ejected from the co operative. So buy buying direct you are actually putting some money directly into the pockets of one of the wood carvers on site.

Prices i thought were reasonable for the quality as cheaper wood carvings we bought elsewhere did not appear to be of the same quality.
