Akamba Handcraft is a wood carving co operative with about 2,800 active Members and more than 7000 non members.

When visiting you can walk through the grounds and see them actually doing the carvings and take photos etc. After you can visit the shop where you can buy the finished products. Each worker is assigned a number and he is paid when an item is sold hence every item in the shop has a number.
The workers are apparently not allowed to sell anything except through the showroom or they will be ejected from the co operative. So buy buying direct you are actually putting some money directly into the pockets of one of the wood carvers on site.

Prices i thought were reasonable for the quality as cheaper wood carvings we bought elsewhere did not appear to be of the same quality.

For buying genuine handicrafts and curio one must visit this place. It's located on Mombasa Airport Road, so it's easy to carry your items properly packed and ready to take them as check in baggage or cabin bag according to the size of your item. The prices are fixed so no bargaining required. All types of currency acceptable so no worries of exchange.

Decent souvenir shop for Africa. If you've been to one within 1,000 miles it has the same stuff. Pretty good variety but since it is more of a consignment shop they won't negotiate or haggle on any of the prices. That being said you'll end up probably paying more than you would if you just randomly saw what you wanted on the side of the road or beach.

Walking through the little wooden workshops where is seems over 1000 people work, i was in awe with the amount of talent these craftsmen have. With a little hammer and cutter, they can make everything from coffee cup coasters to life sized giraffe!
As an art lover its a must to visit!
