For buying genuine handicrafts and curio one must visit this place. It's located on Mombasa Airport Road, so it's easy to carry your items properly packed and ready to take them as check in baggage or cabin bag according to the size of your item. The prices are fixed so no bargaining required. All types of currency acceptable so no worries of exchange.

Decent souvenir shop for Africa. If you've been to one within 1,000 miles it has the same stuff. Pretty good variety but since it is more of a consignment shop they won't negotiate or haggle on any of the prices. That being said you'll end up probably paying more than you would if you just randomly saw what you wanted on the side of the road or beach.

Walking through the little wooden workshops where is seems over 1000 people work, i was in awe with the amount of talent these craftsmen have. With a little hammer and cutter, they can make everything from coffee cup coasters to life sized giraffe!
As an art lover its a must to visit!

A visit to Akamba was included in our city tour. You first walk through the area where they make all the woodcarvings. It's interesting to see how they make all the figures from different types of wood - the guys working here are very skillful.

This tour takes maybe 20mins, then you can explore the shop which is HUGE and you will find any type of wooden item here. They have beautiful statues, bowls, salad spoons, animal figures etc. So you can shop all your souvenirs in one go!

Price range: We paid Ksh1200 for a lovely bowl which is about 25cm long. We also paid 700 for two sets of salad spoons. All are fixed price so no bargaining required!

Later, we found out that you could buy a very tall wooden giraffe on Nyali beach for 700 and small bowls for around 500 or less. Do inspect the quality of work carefully if you shop on the beach, but we found that it was in no way inferior to the stuff at Akamba.

My suggestion: check out the prices on the beach before you come here so you know what you want to pay. The selection here is wider anyway, so it's worth coming for that reason and for the workers getting a fair deal.
