I was here with my wife and two close friends at the height if the migration. I have been to the Mara on several occasions over the last 15years and stayed in many different lodges. While overall I did not find Sand River to be one of the best lodges, I did find that the location (away from much of the main crowds) and the wonderful guides, who will try to satisfy your every game viewing wish, are what gave this camp it's value. At a $1000+ per couple per night I would normally be less forgiving of the mediocre food and less than 4 star service. The pier 1 style furnishings of the tents, and the decks that were so over grown you had no idea if you were actually on a river would also had been off putting, if I had actually spent any time at all in my tent other than to change for dinner and sleep. Lets face it you do not come to the Mara primarily for a gastronomic experience or to spend time in your tent. If I had a fantastic day viewing game from sun up to sun down then frankly I could sleep anywhere. What set Sand River apart from other lodges I have stayed in was the willingness of our guide to cater our experience to exactly what we wanted. Up at 530am out until 2pm, back out at 4pm until 715pm no problem. Out all day with a packed breakfast and a packed lunch, no problem. You want to go look for birds and avoid the mass of land cruisers following the 4 cheetahs, no problem. You want to sit in a herd of wildebeest for 2 hours and just watch and listen to them, no problem. We came to the Mara for the wildlife and to get close to nature, on that the Sand River guides delivered 100% and made up for all the rest.

Room Tip: If you have mobility issues request a room close to the common area as some tents can be a good distance away.

Thank you for your review. One of the aspects that sets us apart is indeed our location; we are truly fortunate to be down in the corner of the Masai Mara National Reserve and away from the more crowded northern areas. As a result, we are frequently able to enjoy spectacular wildlife sightings with nobody else around. This said, we really appreciate the feedback highlighting areas that we need to give attention to, as we are always striving to better ourselves in the service we offer to our guests. We look forward to the opportunity to host you again.

With best wishes from us all at Sand River

Just spent 4 nights at this wonderful lodge. George is a very great lodge manager. Lauren was a big help also. The migration is right outside the property! Wildebeasts were everywhere! if you are lucky enough to have Gerald as your guide you will see everything and anything. Very knowledgeable and great at spotting animals hidden all over! The tents were a very nice size, had a fan if needed, which we did during the day and nigh times were very comfortable. You can have meals whenever you like. Joseph took care of us and placed us different places each day to eat. I was not feeling well one day and he came to our tent multiple times to check to make sure I had enough fluids and toast and whatever else I may have needed! He was super. Our mealtimes flew due to the great service he provided. Really enjoyed the food! If you can arrange to visit during the migration it is extraordinary. During the night the elephants would visit and sometimes the buffalo! It was always an adventure! A great place for a base for viewing amazing amounts of wildlife. Being on the sand river it draws the animals in. You can also sit on your porch at look at the Tanzanian hills! Very pretty. 2 of us took a balloon ride and they were very impressed. All in all a great experience and wouldn't hesitate to visit again.

Our guide Mohammed had an amazing wealth of knowledge about wildlife , his timing and instinct for wildlife drama was amazing. The camp creates a community feel and the hospitality team takes care of every detail without the neurosis of a hotel .

Room Tip: Room 6-8 have great views of the river

Dear Frank

It was great to have the two of you with us, and thank you for your review! It's important to us to maintain a homely, family atmosphere, and we're glad you encountered this at Sand River. Part of being a successful guide is being able to predict where the wildlife will be and what they will be doing, and Mohamed does seem to have a knack for this!
Please keep in touch, and we look forward to seeing you back in the Mara one day.

With best regards from us all at Sand River.

We stayed in the little Sand River, which is furthest (but easily walkable) to the main lodge and dining room. The accommodations and staff is magnificent. The tents are spacious with stunning African decor, comparable to camps with even higher price points. There was good quality wifi throughout the camp The advantages of the little Sand River area tents is more privacy, and better wildlife viewing from the tents, (there were wildebeest and zebra crossings of the Sand River, along with elephants) viewable from the porch outside our tents. Only the Sand River separates this camp section's tents from the Serengeti across the Sand River. There is a separate and more private lodge area for only the few tents of the little Sand River area. We watched a cheetah family cross over from the Serengeti and make a wildebeest kill near our tents.
Our guide, Newton is a second generation safari guide, and he was able to track and find a leopard for a solo viewing as well as lion and cheetah. We also saw the wildebeest migration, although we never did catch a Mara river crossing (we have seen it before, though.). Newton was an exceptional guide, and we are safari veterans. If you request him, you can't go wrong.
The dining was on a as desired basis. The food was good, although Italian food was not their strongest suit. The steaks, burgers, seafood, curries, and African specialties were delicious.
George is a terrific camp manager and took a specific interest in his customers everyday.
I compare this camp favorably with other camps in its price range, and recommend it highly.

Room Tip: stay in the little Sand River section, closer to Serengeti, watch wildebeests cross the Sand River along with zebra.

Thank you so much for taking the time to leave us a review. It was a privilege to have you stay with us, and we're delighted to have been able to accommodate you on the Little Sand River side of camp. It is indeed more private, and we have been able to enjoy some spectacular viewing on that side - as well as spectacular crossings recently at the northern side of camp too. Thank you for your great review and recommendation; we're very fortunate with both our location and the staff team we work with. This time of the year in the Mara is indeed something to be seen in order to be believed!

We hope that you will visit us again soon, and we all join in sending our very best wishes.

Such an explosion of experience in three short days thanks to our special drivers Daniel and Newton and the whole team at the Sand River camp. Can't stop talking about it and looking at my collection of photos and movies. I dream of returning together with even more of my family, especially my adult children, to share the adventure again. Unforgettable and special, the Masai Mara gets into your soul.

Dear Jenny,

Thank you for your great review! Looking back at a collection of photos and videos is a wonderful way of reliving special safari moments... none better though than to come back and make some more memories! Africa is indeed hopelessly addictive, and I'm afraid the only cure is to return to feed the addiction! It was great to have you with us, and we look forward to seeing you back in the Mara again soon, and to meeting more of your family.

With best wishes,
George, Theresa and all at Sand River
