We stayed at Ashnil tent camp for two nights while on safari in Masai Mara. Don’t let the tent camp part fool you, this place was a five-star resort. The food was incredible, the staff so accommodating, the tents have the most comfortable beds and the hottest nicest showers we had had in the five places we stayed during a 10 day safari. The real treat however was the grounds of the hotel are sitting on one side of the MARA river while hippos and crocodiles basking on the other side. I cannot wait to come visit this wonderful place again.

Firstly, we booked a twin room for 2 nights but they gave us a double room (room G1). Their supervisor (Alfred) claimed that they had thought of changing our room to a twin room on Day 2 but they failed to contact us because we went out for the safari. In fact we had returned to the hotel in the early afternoon. If they were sincere enough to help us, they could have left a note on our desk asking us to contact them for the room change.

Secondly, on our 2nd night we heard some irritating noise - with conversation, loud laughter and object-moving sounds, and it woke us up at late 3am till 6am. We dared not walk far away from our room G1 in the dark and so we just shouted twice to ask them to keep quiet. However they kept making the noise. Then 2 male staff members passed by and we asked them to ask those people to keep quiet. Unfortunately, the noise persisted.

The next day when we reflected our dissatisfaction to their general manager. That manager, without thorough investigation at all, said that it must be from our neighbour G2 (we were in G1). However, he did not know that G1 and G2 were connected and our two friends stayed in G2! They could hear the noise too! He then blamed G3-4. However, again the direction of sound was not correct. G2-G4 were on our left, but the noise came from our right side.

He then blamed the some spanish visitors living at Tent 40+ (actually quite far away from our camp). We did not hear any noise from that Tent at noon, at evening and at night at all! Why suddenly these visitors, after long-day safari, woke up at late 3am, chatting and moving objects round non-stop till 6am?

The noise was actually not that far away from ours and I suspected these were from their staff!

Actually we understood that the manager might not be able to do much. But at least his attitude was not professional and he just threw out some random answers without proper investigation. That property supervisor, Alfred, appeared to be more sincere. At least he did listen and feel sorry that we could not sleep well.

Finally, the room was too dark. A lamp wasn't working and we asked the staff to fix it twice until it worked again. Staff at the restaurant were unprofessional too - he offered us coffee, then gave us few drops and asked if it's enough...a bad joke indeed.

Room tip: Do not choose this hotel!!

Dear Carly,

Thank you for these review and more so for sharing this disappointing and regrettable complaint with us.

We truly appreciate and welcome such feedback from our esteemed clients as it helps in identifying the areas that require improvement in our operations.
Allow me to take this opportunity to express our profuse apologies on these shortcomings, and assure you remedial measures to ensure such is never repeated again have been mooted.

It is unfortunate that the camp had run short of twin bedded tents by the time your group checked in, and the fact that you were not moved the next day is highly regretted as is an oversight very uncharacteristic of our norm?

We have since established that the disturbing noise was actually not from any of our staff but rather from other guests ie a Chilean group who were enjoying themselves, and would stay until late at night making merry. On the material day they seemingly went overboard and efforts to have them calm down were hardly heeded as some chuckles could still be heard at a distance.

We are very sorry on the lackluster manner in which this grave matter was handled and hereby assure you corrective measures have since been taken to ensure such is never repeated again.

Please accept our sincere apologies in all these and would like to invite you back to witness remarkable improvements on the overall as per the measures inculcated.

Thanks again and wish you all the best with your endeavors.

The food was ok and the camp overall was fine. The gift shop was well stocked. My only suggestion is to make sure that you advise your clients that some of your rooms especially after 25-45 are a very long walk from the lobby where you get offs and wifi. Also there are no kettles in the room for tea or coffee on the month most other lodges at this price point have them. So it makes for a very awkward experience. For the older or those who have trouble walking to and fro it’s nice to get a heads up.

Dear NB,

It was a pleasure hosting you and thanks for the time taken to post your reviews as per the ex[experiences encountered at our camp.

We have taken note of your concerns on the distance in between some of our far off rooms and the need to have tea/coffee making facilities in the rooms, of which I would like to assure you the latter is work in progress and soon all of our rooms will be equipped with these faculties.
On the distance matter, its unfortunate we cant do much and the best we do is to try to be sensitive n considerate to the older clients whom we allocate rooms close by the utility areas. Otherwise we do have our security staff escort/walk the clients to their rooms hence are kept company all the way.

Thanks again for having chosen to stay with us and hope to host you again in the near future.

Pleasant tented camp with lovely helpful staff. Comfortable and nicely maintained rooms, adequate hot water mornings and evening. Food was excellent with large choice of dishes at every meal. However, there were a few negatives. The camp is large and caters to large group tours. This leads to inadequate space in the living/bar area in the evenings. Some of the tents are extremely far away from the main area. Finally, there seems to be minimal environmental consideration with the overuse of plastic bags to line the waste bins and no solar energy. A pleasant place but personally would prefer something smaller and avoid the crowds.

Room tip: Request rooms near the main area

Dear MsDeboo,

It was a pleasure hosting you and thanks for having chosen to stay with us.

We thank you for the time taken to post your review as per the experiences encountered while was aboard our luxurious tented camp. Thanks for the compliments and likewise for the negatives noted of which have been taken very positively.

We are in the process of doing away with the plastic matter as these has been banned in the country and what you witnessed are stocks which are being exhausted as the ban just came into effect a few months ago, time which some of the reputable manufactures of the same had produced large batches hence pleaded to be given leeway to clear on the same thus the few in circulation. These is the sane case with solar energy whereby institutions as ours have been given a window to invest on solar energy as a means of environmental/energy conservation.

I have noted your comment on our camp being vast n catering for large groups and would have preferred a smaller facility. I believe however the case apart from the limited space in the public areas, our personalized services were maintained and our staff attended to your needs promptly.
Due to our vantage position and the exemplary services which distinguishes us from our competitors and the more reason customers choose to stay with us, our place is ever packed and especially during the peak season as was the case during your visit. Maybe in future you can book to stay with us during our low seasons ie between March - early July when the traffic is as well down but our services/products remain the same.

Otherwise thanks again for the stay and feedback.

We wish you best of regards and look forward to your repeat visit at an opportune time.
