“Perfect location to enjoy Luxor”
Reviewed 25 April 2012

Stayed here for 3 nights, paid to upgrade to full Nile view room - definitely worth it - the balcony is large, the view of the Nile and Valley of the Kings is superb, especially as the hotel looks directly over the river, with no road between you and it. There is a slight issue with cruise ships moored below keeping their engines on - not too noisy, but a constant drone. The pool and pool terraces are excellent, and service to them was generally very good.

The location was excellent, walking distance to Luxor Temple and various restaurants etc. Caleches and taxis easy to find - negotiate the price before getting in.

We share the views of several other reviewers: keycards constantly needed resetting; Thai restaurant was excellent service and food; the Italian restaurant was poor service and very poor food. The breakfasts were very good, inside and outside space worked well. We were however very unimpressed that we had to pay for cold water (but fruit juices were free) or any tea other than that in the jugs. The daily room charge for a kettle and tea/coffee was also pennypinching.

Staff were generally professional, friendly and helpful. We'd stay here again if we return to Luxor.

Room Tip: Go for a Nile view

Stayed for 3 nights B & B in a Nile view room – the extra cost was worth the view. The rooms were large and very comfortable and spotlessly clean at all times. The staff were very please to see us – the overall numbers at his time (April 2012) are well down on the norm, which is a shame.

The breakfast choice was more then adequate – as we were out all day for both days we had dinner at the hotel all three nights – the Lebanese and the Italian restaurants were fine but the Thai restaurant was by far the best.

Room Tip: Nile view room – the extra cost was worth the view

This hotel has comfortable rooms, a terrific pool, great staff and restaurants, what it also has is up to 3 Nile cruise ships moored at hotel next door, who run thier engines all day and all night. You can't relax by the pool without the continual throb of engines and the smell of exhaust fumes. They also block a good third of the Nile view. The hotel say they can do nothing as the boats are to do with the hotel next door. It was a real shame as i would have upgraded to a nile view room, but the noise was just too great. I advise to check if the boats are there before booking.

Room Tip: courtyard rooms on the far side from reception have no view but are cooler and very quiet.

This is a fantastic Hotel, i would not stay anywhere else in Luxor. We upgraded to a nile view and i recommend that as the balconys are large and the view is beautiful and you can see the valley of the kings in the distance which is lovely.
The layout of the hotel is fantastic with an open air courtyard with 2 restaurants and a coffee shop bit but the evening entertainment is a bit strange. Its a shame that alot of people dont eat at the hotel as the prices are not that bad and the quality is really high. I ate some fantastic dishes and the mixed grill is superb. The best restaurant is outside on the terrace next to the nile, not the buffet restaurant but the lebanese one next to the shisha bar. We were the only couple there and it was lovely - we went for walk outside the hotel afterwards and saw a load of brits in dingy restaurants saving about 3 quid - lovely.
The rooms are good and spacious and the service is very good. Our flight was slightly late and we asked for late checkout and they said we can stay till 2pm for no charge - which is rare in hotels so brilliant.
The pool area is fantastic and big and its a perfect place for a week. Prices are low compared to what we are used to.

My wife and I have recently returned from a holiday in Egypt where we stayed for a week at the Steigenberger, followed by 4 days in Sharm-El-Sheikh for some snorkelling. This was our 4th visit to Egypt and the first time we stayed in a hotel at Luxor rather than cruising the Nile (for a first holiday to the Nile we would recommend a cruise, but for 'old hands' a hotel in Luxor allows great flexibility and the ability to visit and re-visit sites, or to stay as long as you wish - rather than following a guide). Comparing our visit to previous years we definitely noticed the lack of tourists (we were told numbers were down 30%), and the advantage of this was a lack of queues and relative peace and quiet at even the most popular sites. The only down side to this was an increase in the 'hassle-factor' by hawkers - not surprising given the fact that so many are out of work due to low tourist numbers.

We were very impressed with the hotel. Our 'Nile view' room offered us the most wonderful ability to sit on our (enormous) balcony and watch the setting sun over the hill which hides the Valley of the Kings! The room was excellent, as was the cleaning. All staff were efficient, very courteous, cheerful and attentive. The restaurants were very good and cover most tastes, my favourite being the Thai, my wife's the Lebanese, but the Italian was good, too. The pool was a reasonable size and a very welcome feature on return from a trip out to a temple/tombs (early start followed by a morning site visit and then poolside late lunch). Also we had two sunset sails on a felucca moored alongside the hotel.

We walked to Luxor Temple, and returned by Galesh (horse carriage), but otherwise used taxis. We soon got the hang of bartering with taxi drivers just outside the hotel, and once we found a reliable and informative taxi driver we used him for several outings. He would drop us at a site and wait until we had finished, and would work out efficient routes to fit in several visits in one day.

We were B&B, which worked out well as meals are cheap, and gave us flexibility.

We would recommend the hotel to anyone as giving really good service, good facilities and excellent value for money. We also felt saddened that so many people seem to have shied away from Egypt recently due to the political situation. We saw no unrest whatever. The locals certainly need the business!

Our enthusiasm for the Steigenberger Hotel was increased all the more when we moved to Sharm where our experience of the Marriott Hotel was extremely disappointing!

Room Tip: Go for Nile view. 2nd Floor is good.
