Lovely old building with some superb rooms all very well furnished. Gardens a haven of peace from Luxor. Central location so easy to walk into centre and bazaar.
Service is impeccable as you would expect.
Highs - spectacular plate of petit fours with chocolate creation in bedroom on arrival.
Lows - food very average for dinner - cold, tough meat and very very slow. (Two hours for two courses). In some ways it may be living on its past glories and does not quite match equivalent great old establishments - Royal Norfolk Nairobi, Peninsular in Hong Kong and Raffles in Singapore. However it was an lovely experience to stay there and with current low levels of visitors to Egypt not to be missed.

Room Tip: Rooms overlooking Nile can be noisy but views good. Rooms overlooking garden quite but limited.

Arriving at the Winter Palace after a week on a Nile cruise, we were expecting to relax on our second week and that we certainly did. After being hassled so much for the first couple of days of our stay at the hotel we decided not to venture outside of the grounds for the rest of the week. We were hassled by the local people the moment we stepped outside of the hotel, which was certainly no fun at all, in fact it completely ruined our holiday. We found that we couldn't go for a relaxing stroll during the day or in the evening without being literally bombarded. We also found some of the local people to be rude, unwelcoming and mostly agressive because we didn't want to buy from them. Some of the horses used on the carriages were badly treated and some of them were half starved and dehydrated, this is in February/March so we couldn't bear to see what condition they will be in june through to september during the hottest time of the year. Some of them were at deaths door! we found this unpleasant to see and very distressing for us.

The hotel itself is gorgeous and very historical. The food was very nice with lots of choice at each sitting with hot and cold buffet or menu choices, the staff were friendly and helpful. The gardens and heated pool are absolutely lovely and the sunbeds very comfey and plentiful. Our room was very spacious with high celings and nice big cosy beds. We had a beautiful garden view with a small balcany.

Due to the absolute harassment we received from the local people and seeing so many mistreated and malnourished horses we will not be returning to Luxor which is a real shame.

We have been staying at the Hilton in Luxor but went to the Winter Palace to soak up a bygone atmosphere and have afternoon tea with a Nile view. We emailed ahead to book and received a prompt reply from the Manager - however on arrival there seemed to be no record of our booking (but there was plenty of space - so fine). The service was polite but not terribly welcoming. The afternoon tea itself was really quite disappointing - plentiful food but not very tasty and certainly nothing special. It was good value for money by London standards (which I suppose is my benchmark) at only £7.50 each. But I would say such a beautiful building should be setting the bar much higher and offering something special, rather than a slightly stale and uninspiring assortment. I wouldn't recommend a special trip for the tea, though it was interesting to see the hotel given we considered staying there (I have to say I was quite pleased we hadn't, much as the gardens looked beautiful and obviously the location is very central). I agree with the reviewer below that there is too much hassle the moment you set foot at the bottom of the stairs as well.

The Winter Palace Hotel is a delight. The high Edwardian decoration is matched by the amusing collection of English country-house books in the bar. There is a lovely garden full of well-labelled, unusual trees and plants, a huge swimming pool and several restaurants. The more expensive rooms are large with high ceilings and balconies, and the whole place is very well run by the excellent manager and the exceedingly well-mannered and friendly staff. We prefer a room on the garden side of the hotel, but if you don’t mind the noise, enjoy the Nile view. Room service is enthusiastic if a bit hit and miss. The food is of an acceptable but not high standard. If you are in Luxor for sightseeing of a serious kind, I would highly recommend a good guide and there is no one better than Hassan Mahmood who speaks English well, is intelligent and knowledgeable, and can organise any kind of a visit anywhere. The sites are emptier than they have been for years, and Luxor is a direct flight away from London or Manchester.

Room Tip: Garden view is quietest.
