It is pleasant to relax in the shady garden here, and quench ones thirst. After a long session visiting the many temples and tombs nearby a meal here is a must.

There is a set menu that includes a main course (chicken, duck, kebab halle, fish, kofta or a vegetarian tagen are usually available) alongside which will be served bread mixed salad, pickled vegetables, cheese, rice, French fries, a vegetable tagen and a dessert. Soup and/or fried aubergines are often sometimes offered.

The drinks list includes the usual hot and cold soft drinks as well as beer, wine and Egyptian spirits.

In February 2017 the cost of the kofta meal was 65 EGP. I'm adding a picture showing the whole meal that I enjoyed.

Having not been here for several years I was very pleasantly surprised that the path in to this restaurant and hotel has been levelled, that the whole garden area is now tidy and clean.

But the real surprise was in the food. A really fresh salad of sliced tomato, cucumber, bell-pepper and red cabbage with grated carrot was accompanied by warm flat-bread. The fried aubergine were crisp and tasty. The kofta came in a rich brown gravy with peas, carrots and probably other vegetables rather than the red tomato sauce served elsewhere, and the French Fries were well cooked in hot clean oil. A Stella completed an excellent and inexpensive meal.

We visited this restaurant twice during our recent visit to Luxor, once for lunch and once for drinks both times after visiting tombs, temples etc.

To find this restaurant you follow the dirt road beside the ticket office at the Colossi of Memnon. Follow this road for 300 - 400 metres and you see sign on the left hand side, you will know when you are near as there is usually a black guard dog chained up outside the restaurant.

Outside and inside it is rustic in design with a 600 year old tree running through the garden. The seating is long benches with padded cushions and is very comfortable. Food and drinks to order and freshly made. There is not a printed menu but Mohamed will advise what is available and choices are normally chicken, fish, duck and his speciality of Kofta Tagine all served with salad, bread, rice and french fries and water. Drinks include beer, wine, soft drinks and freshly made juices. He also served us fresh dates for desert.

As you would expect there were flies/wasps flying around so he gave me a handmade straw fly swatter and at the end of the meal we were all presented with wooden handmade necklaces.

The prices were very reasonable for the 3 of us including drinks we paid 150LE and the quality and quantity was excellent. Would recommend this restaurant to anyone especially after visiting sites in the area for lovely refreshing drink or meal.

Restaurant Mohammed
I dined several times at Mohammed's in 2014, 2015, and plan to visit in 2016. Restaurant Mohammed is a little off the beaten track but accessible.
- From the West Bank Luxor Boat Ramp (ferry slip), take Al Qarna Road which becomes Al Tmsalyn to the far end of the Mortuary Temple of Amenhotep III.
- Before the road branches right towards the Ramesseum you will see the antiquities ticket office on the left.
- Follow the dirt road beside the ticket office for a short distance (you will be able to see Medinet Habu farther on) and look for the restaurant's sign on the left hand side of the road.
There are outside (thatched) and inside dining areas with long wooden tables and cushioned benches with backs. The food is prepared on order. I usually ordered a vegetable version of the meat dish my companions devoured (kofta tajine? in a delicious sauce). The side dishes, including bread, rice, french fries, fried aubergine, and assorted vegetables, were fresh and generous. The fresh-squeezed lemonade is the best I have ever had, and the Stellas were served very cold.
The pricing was very moderate and, even better, we always enjoyed an unhurried meal with plenty of time for conversation in a restful, charming environment that reflects the best of Egyptian food and hospitality.
