Nowadays you have to buy a ticket to visit the small dome at the top of the hill (Qubbet el-Hawa) even if you don't want to visit the Thombs. The guards of the Thombs are very unfriendly, so after visiting one thomb we said goodbye to him (without giving extra money) and walked to the small dome on top of the hill. From there the view very beautiful and spectacular. If you want to make a nice walk, you can continu to the Monastry of St. Simeon.
To get to the other side of the Nile, just take a public ferry that leaves opposite the railway station (200 meter walk or so). Be alert that all the men sit on one part of the boat and all the women sit on the other part of the boat.

These are the tombs of some of the most powerful non-royal people of the Egyptian Old Kingdom, some of which contain beautiful decorations. Go early, as it is a fairly hard walk up the hillside to get to the tombs.

We were disappointed to find only two tombs open the day we went, usually there are six. Some are still retaining their bright colors. Note it is a steep climb to the top and from the boat ramp there are quarries two km north, where the Colossi of Memnon (in Luxor, West Bank) were quarried. Part of an obelisk of Seti I lies near the ticket kiosk.

This was probably the highlight of our visit to Aswan and it was not even on our original itinerary. It's hard to not notice the site as night when it is lit up so we asked for a tour, initially just to be able to take a hike. After visiting the Valley of the Kings you note that this is teh Valley but on a minor scale. However, the lack of crowds, the ability to get closer into the tombs, to notice the similarities in theme and structure is a major advantage. Highly recommend a visit and, if yo have the energy, hike up to the old Ottoman fort at the top of the hill for the views.

I have been to Aswan 6 times and did not know about this place. But I would say the best of the Old Kingdom tombs are here. They are amazing, they have color and sculpture and even statues in them.

It is a LONG walk up the hill from the Nile so make sure you bring water and a hat for the hot sun, but you will certainly be rewarded by the tombs of the princes and nobles of Elephantine Island.
