We saw this in the heat of the day. Very good to see how they made them. Worth seeing and the movie before hand was very informative.
While this site is mentioned by guides as a seventh wonder of the world, it isn't a spectacular setting. It is fascinating and worth a visit for the historical significance
hate to downplay what you see but this unfinished obelisk is in an abandoned workshop, Dolorite is an extremely hard stone. It looks like a flaw was discovered in the massive obelisk to be (137 feet, weighing about 1162 tons) and was left in the bedrock.
Walk around; lots of ups/downs, sometimes a bit challenging to maneuver. It's hot; bring water. From the top you have a good view of a nearby ancient cemetery.
Admission is 40 L.E.'s. When you come down there's the usual gift shop 'trap' with more or less pesky vendors. Try to enjoy saying, no, unless you want to buy something.
It is just an old granite quarry, but I found the visit very interesting. You get a good sense of what carving and transporting these huge blocks of stone required. You can reach it by taxi from Aswan. If you take a private tour to the dams and the Philae temple, this visit would (or should) be included
The Obelisk is a carved in stone massive sculpture that lays unfinished. The location is extremely hot and there's nothing else to see right there. It's up to your guide's skills to make you interested about how they moved so large pieces and such
