Sometimes star ratings vary in standard from country to country. We stayed in other supposedly 5-star accommodation in Egypt that was more like 3 or 4 stars by European or North American criteria. This one, however, would pass as 5-star anywhere.
We felt completely safe all over Cairo and extra safe at this hotel. Cars are searched (and sniffed!) at the entrance and the army is posted right outside, unnecessary while we were there as everything was perfectly peaceful.
Rooms are superbly equipped and maintained with the only glaring omission a writing desk. If we could fit the bed in our suitcase we would have, there is a real danger you won’t want to get up in the morning it’s that comfy! The top floor gym is huge and excellent. We ate in all the restaurants and all were very good but pricey. The small shopping center attached to the hotel has a standard Starbucks if you want a simpler or cheaper breakfast option. There is an HSBC branch and ATM in the hotel but the AWB ATM in the shopping center supplies withdrawals in a wadge of small bills which is much more useful for tipping purposes. Internet is expensive and slow but if you just sign-up for the Fairmont Presidents’ Club (free) beforehand you can get free Wi-Fi using your membership number.
There isn’t much in the way of tourist shopping or nightlife nearby, adjacent buildings are offices or construction sites and immediately behind the hotel is a tatty residential area. If you can brave the busy road out front there is a pleasant garden along the Nile to stroll in and the riverside cornice was tout-free as there are no major attractions nearby. Ask one of the hotel guards to help you cross the road.
