I had wanted to visit Egypt for some time, and now was the time. Prior to my travel, I read numerous reviews and forums about properties in Cairo. I decided that I wanted to stay in the downtown core of Cairo, as I would be getting around on my own, and wanted to feel like the area I stayed in would be safe. I decided to stay at Alexander Hotel, in part, as it is centrally located, near many food outlets, and shops, and the price is ideal for the budget conscious traveller. The rooms have good AC (imp.), are basic, as is breakfast, but the staff are friendly, and did try to accommodate my needs. There is a common room, where any number of guests and staff could/did chat, share ideas, and many laughs. There is wireless internet, which does have a weak/unstable connection, but that was a minor inconvenience, as far as my needs were concerned. PS... Be firm, and hold your ground when you arrive, and are given the tour speech. They do offer many good tours, but do your homework ahead of time, and do not feel pressured into signing up for tours that do not interest you. Overall, I would recommend this property for the budget traveller, seeking a decent place to stay, a good location for getting around, and for the helpful staff....specifically Mohamed, Nesma, and Mostafa.
