All in all, this is a very nice property. I stayed there for business last month. As far as the business traveler is concerned, it has everything you need. Wireless, nice business center, great conference facilities, very good restaurants, and a nice workout facility. It is centrally located so travel by cab etc is very easy. Here are some more detailed thoughts:

Expense - this hotel is not cheap. The food, although very good for hotel food, is expensive. Wireless is not free. The wireless is also a tad hit and miss, it will randomly shut down on you which is kind of a pain but not really awful. The business center services are incredibly expensive but the service there is top notch. If you need supplies, or bottled water etc, do not buy it at the hotel. Walk out the front, turn left at the frontage road and there is a little market place about a block away.

Service - very good, never had a problem. Most of the employees are fluent in English and very helpful. room service was also very quick.

Rooms - decent, good view. Although there was some updating needed in the bathroom, it is the typical hyatt room - which is nice.

Location - this hotel is centrally located, so it is really nice, probably one of the better located hotels in Seoul. Beware, although a subway station is nearby, it is a walk. The Marriott was much more convenient in this regard. The property is on the edge of insadong, which, for a tourist, is pretty useful. The restaurants and ex pat bars there are also nice and a change from the hotel. Do a little Internet surfing or pop into an ex pat bar and they will tell you where to eat. Don't stay in the hotel unless you have to. Mount Namsan is across the street - perfect for hiking and workouts. Really convenient.

Workout facilities - very nice, full gym, and pool. Marriott still better in this regard, especially w the Olympic sized pool.

Airport - the Korean air shuttle runs every half an hour. It makes about two stops prior to going to the airport and I think it was about 15 dollars, it is really nice.

All in all you are not going to go wrong staying here. If I were doing the tourist thing, this is probably where I would stay. As far as business I'd aim for something more like the marriott, especially if you had to leave the property. The one regard, business wise, where this hotel is really nice - it is fully functional - if you do not have to leave the property you can utilize all of the facilities and it is extraordinarily convenient.

The Grand Hyatt is among the better hotels in Seoul, very nicely kept, with exquisite grounds, clean and well-maintained rooms, and great views toward the Han river. It is located on the south slope of Mount Namsan (the "South Mountain") which is now in the center of Seoul, but used to be to the south of town (what is now the Downtown area).

This central location is also very convenient: less than half an hour hiking to the west takes one to the Seoul Tower which, being on top of the Mount, has excellent views of the entire city. Fifteen minutes or less walk in the other direction take you to Itaewon - one of the premier shopping destinations for foreigners. Reasonably priced cabs (always waiting outside the main entrance) can take you both Downtown to the north, or south toward the Han river and the trendy south side on the other side of the river. Right outside the hotel there is a stop of the City tour bus, which for about $10 can take you around many of the premier destinations. Last, but not least, there is a convenient shuttle bus to/from the Incheon airport, which costs about $15 one way, and runs about twice per hour during day time.

The inside of the hotel is very nice - it has a large lounge area, frequently with live musicians (see the picture). A level or two below has one of the trendier bars in town. Staff is very polite and always ready to help. Rooms are fine and kept clean and nice, daily replacing the water bottles, and placing fresh fruit and bathroom utensils. Throughout the stay, the room was both quiet and pleasant.

Some minor downsides: there is no iron, which could be a problem in case of need, and one has to pay for Internet - 625 won per min up to a max of about $25 per day - a bit steep given that the business center for the hotel only has one computer.

Overall, nice place - would gladly go there again.

Room Tip: take a room facing south for great views

This Hyatt property lives up to Hyatt standards, and provides sweeping views of the neighborhood below and large portions of the city from its perch on the side of Mount Namsam. The grounds are beautiful, and guests should make every effort to stroll or hike the trails of the park on Mount Namsam. Peace and tranquility in the middle of a city of more than 10M people.

This is a large property, and the lobby definitely can have the feel of being a tourist hub or conference hotel at times. Tour buses outside and large groups milling around are not out of the ordinary.

Rooms are comfortable, and provide the expected amenities. My only criticisms are that the shower was a bathtub shower, and the hotel does not provide an ironing board and iron. The more modern hotels in the region have nicer showers, and do provide an ironing board.

The fitness center is adequate, but can feel a bit cramped. There's a small indoor lap pool, and a great outdoor pool. Locker rooms, sauna, etc are available.

In comparison, I've stayed at both the JW Marriott and the Grand Hyatt Seoul. Each has its advantages, and in my opinion neither trumps the other. In the future I am most likely to make my choice based on location relative to where I will be doing business.

I had some trepeditations about being some distance from the center of the City, but the hotel has a free shuttle which is very convenient and being away from all the hustle and bustle is actually a plus. We upgraded to the Club level and enjoyed wonderful breakfasts (no soggy Cheerios here!) and a great happy hour (where, in addition to a full bar, and a quality assortment of snacks, they serve small plates of really tasty dishes, obviously freshly prepared by somebody who knows their way around a kitchen). The staff are really friendly and seem to sincerely welcome guests. The spa has a wonderful pool and men's locker room area with hot and cold pools. The only downside was that you have to pay for internet.

Room Tip: Upgrade to the Club level and you'll get access to the 15th and 17th floors club rooms for break...
