“Very nice hotel with excellent staff”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 12 August 2012

Stayed here for 3 nights on a business trip in August. Very new. Rooms are excellent. Beds are a little stiff but that seems to be the norm in Korean hotels. Across the street is a 1000 year old Buddhist temple which offered a nice escape from the hustle. And the hustle is provided by the very large shopping mall the hotel sits atop. Wifi was free in the lobby but not great for Skyping (but what can you expect for free?). Expensive but all Seoul hotels are expensive.

I stayed here for two night after a one night stay at the grand just a short walk away, and I have to say that I think the Coex Intercontinental is vastly superior to it's older brother down the way.

The overall atmosphere in my Coex stay was much more appealing to the under 50 crowd. This places is very "cool." You will know what I am talking about after you see the floating lights in the lobby. The whole staff is very professional at all time. Nothing but smiles, and good mornings. Also, no matter who I asked questions to about local eats and nightlife, everyone went out of their way to look it up. Very impressive. Getting the club access is more than worth it if you plan on going out during the night. Through out the whole day, the have unlimited coffee and small snacks like cheeses and fruits. During the evening, they have cocktail hour which is great if you are planning to go out and party. I was going to a rave just down the street both Friday and Sat, so this worked out perfectly. The beds are very very comfortable, especially compared to Japanese style beds, which I'm most used to. The fitness center, spa, and driving range was a great surprise. Very clean, very new, and everyone who worked there was all about helping. All in all, this place is great if you want to be ultra comfortable in Seoul. The train station is about a seven minutes walk, so anywhere you want to go is just a cheap subway ride away. In the vicinity of the hotel there are a few bars and good eats, but nothing like Meyongdong or Gangnam. Again these are just a train rides way away.

My only complaint is that if you have tattoos, you cannot go into the spa. Well, that is unless someone sees you. I think it is crazy that still in 2012, hotels still forbid this very modern form of self expression. How boring this world would be if everyone was straight laced suit wearing squares.

Aside from that, this places is tops. I will be back in three weeks for sure.

Room Tip: Get the club access!

3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 9 August 2012

I recently spent three nights in the Intercontinental Coex for business in July. The hotel is well located for business travelers and there is a large shopping mall attached to the hotel along with a number of restaurants and bars nearby.

When you first walk in the lobby seems large and impressive but soon gives way to a standard lobby restaurant/bar and loud speakers which is playing music from a lounge singer in another bar. The lobby bar is overly bright, especially if they seat you in a seat that has a bench instead of a regular chair. Food here was average at best - would not recommend.

The rooms are of average size and I understand that they are renovating rooms but I was unsure if mine had been completely renovated. The rug, desk, tv and bed all looked new but the bathroom looked like it had not been touched. The bathroom actually reminded me of something you see in a US motel.

I had a room near the lift and could hear everything outside my room to the point that I was going to ask to switch. Also, the soundproofing from outside is not great and I could also hear the traffic (I was on 14th floor).

Standard hotel and would probably choose another hotel before staying here again.

Spent three nights at the InterContinental during a holiday to Seoul. This hotel better suited for the business traveller as it was too far away from many of the city's tourist and shopping sights. Overall, nice hotel and good value with reasonably spacious rooms and comfortable beds. The quality of the wi-fi in the rooms and lobby was quite poor and it kept dropping out which is inexcusable for a business hotel in a country like South Korea which has some of the best internet speeds in the world. The InterContinental might also want to rethink their stingy wifi rates which charge extra for each additional device being used in your room. Most good hotels these days should not be charging extra for this service at all.

Sitting atop the COEX Mall (3 underground levels, the largest mall in Asia is the claim) and next to the convention centre, Intercontinental COEX is the only place to stay in Seoul if you are attending a conference here. As you would expect from a business class hotel, the service is 1st class, the concierge, checkin and any staff that you reach on the phone all speak perfect English and are ready to assist. Breakfast is a huge treat, they have a selection of everything and while I was talking to the chef or getting a fresh fruit juice made, my cappucino was being brought to my table. Contrary to other advisors' reports, I never found the restaurant busy, you just have to get yourself up in time. I always went down there between 6 and 6:30 and could choose any table.
My room was large and the bed was very comfortable even if it had too many extra pillows, why does anyone need 6 or 8 pillows? I had trouble finding any international power plugs but I did bring my own power adaptor and was able to find 1 or 2 plugs in the room for it to charge my laptop and iphone. The checkin and checkout at this hotel was fast, accurate and pleasant, even after a 20 hour trip to get there. Wifi in the lobby is free but the room is expensive, although this can be negotiated away. I would like to see the quality of the internet improve in the room before I would be prepared to pay for it though, it worked better in the lobby. Can't comment on the bars or the gym as I never had a chance to use them, but judging from the other comments and from the quality of the service that I met from every employee I would guess that they would serve you very well. I enjoyed the fresh coffee in my room and note that you can drink the water here. Well done Intercontinental COEX, I will return.

Room Tip: Get a room on the top floors as I believe these have been renovated first. My room had a new LCD TV...
