Botanical Garden and Zoo (Jardin Botanico y Zoologico)
Reviewed 29 July 2016

Unless I missed them the botanical gardens only seemed to have trees and shrubs with very few flowers. The zoo was upsetting as the animals did not have much space. It is a difficult decision whether to visit a Zoo or not. My money helps feed the animals but when you visit a zoo like this you realise that giving an elephant or a tiger a tiny space is nothing less than cruelty.

This is a very well cared garden in Asuncion worth paying the entry fee for parking -about a dollar or two- and you can stroll under the shade of nice trees and flowers. I was surprised to find out that many people skip this place for other free green areas, but this is one is worth spending an afternoon. There is a zoo I did not visit, but i hear good comments from those who visited.

It is a good place to discover in Asunción... it is a big park to spend some time or play outdoor sports. In the Zoo you can check usual animals and must look for Elephant, lions, tigers, hippo and more local species...

Leopard, jaguar, panther, lion, lioness, leopard (not a cheetah if you can distinguish), fox and tiger are all in the same zoo. You can see black cartoon bird with big yellow beak "toco toucan" in this zoo. Also there are local animals that are not acquainted, such as tapir. All the names are not written and the written things are only Spanish, so I dont know many of them's names.
Natural beauty is incredible as all around Asuncion known as the green capital

We weren't sure what to expect from the zoo after reading other reviews here, so we were pleasantly surprised. It was quiet during the week but even as the first people there we felt very safe walking around (they've installed cameras and there are lots of staff around too). Some of the animals' cages have room for improvement but in general the animals seemed to be well looked after. They have a great selection of animals that are native to Paraguay and South America, plus impressive tigers and an elephant too. The staff are friendly and there were quite a few families with kids there. Entry was 7000 PYG per adult, which is less than £1 by the current exchange rate—bargain.

Two things to be aware of: the zoo has a pretty haphazard layout and is bigger than it initially appears with poor signposting. Also, definitely take water and bug spray with you as there isn't anywhere inside to buy refreshments.

Can't comment much on the Botanical Gardens as we were so hot and thirsty by the time we'd finished with the zoo that we left. They seem lovely, though more like a park than gardens as other reviewers have mentioned.
