Zion Hotel
Ranked #79 of 102 Hotels in Jerusalem
Reviewed 6 January 2005

I was extremely disappointed in this place, particularly having read other favorable reviews. The hotel is smack in the center of downtown, a location that many may find appealing -- but the same is true for many modern hotels (e.g. the Kikar Zion, Jerusalem Tower) where you can be just as close to the action and also sleep. This one is directly above a round-the-clock cafe right at the entrance to the pedestrian mall. I'm not ultra-sensitive to noise, but even on the fourth floor I felt like I was resting on the shoulder of a highway. Since the hotel has bustling pedestrian areas abutting it in every direction, it is not clear that there is any "good side of the hotel" where things would have been any different. I have heard that the A/C dampens the noise quite a bit (I was there in winter), but you would have to crank it to full all day and night.

I would describe the accommodation as "functional, but dilapidated" -- about the level of a roadside motel in the US. There is a long dark stairway leading up to the reception, which continues many floors up to the rooms. Everything in the room did work eventually, but several appliances in the room were falling apart and there were no instructions on how to use anything.

I gather this is a family business. The reception seemed friendly and well-meaning. In addition to Hebrew, one of the owner/attendants spoke only halting English and another spoke only fragments of French.

The price was very reasonable ($50, full breakfast included), but I found that for just a few dollars more I could get something much more like a full service hotel. On the other hand, if you are on a tight budget there are scores of hostels and guest houses that can beat this price.

Final caution: when I was there, the place took only cash.
