Visited early in the morning just before tour groups. Felt personal. A lot of renovation going on inside. Cats inside which was lovely.

The decor and feel inside is nothing else. The only other place I can say it felt close to was the Vatican.

Beautiful Byzantine Church transformed to a Mosque under the Ottomans and now a museum.
Designed by the Greeks Isadore of Miletus and Anthemius of Tralee on the orders of Justinian.
The massive dome inspired the famous Ottoman Architect Mimar Sinan.
Just a shame that most of the wonderful frescos were plastered over by the Ottomans.
One could spend a whole day marvelling at what for a thousand years was the largest Basillica.

Definitely worth a visit especially if you buy the Istanbul museum pass which makes it well worth the money. It's spectacular even with the ongoing restoration works and the tourist crowd was still bearable when I visited in December.

So historical! There was grafiti from the 15th century! Make sure you throughly explore the Haiga Sophia. Be careful on the steps, they are worn and slippery.
