Owner description: Built between 1609-1616, this impressive mosque has six minarets. Why is it called "Blue Mosque?" There are two stories: the first, more common one is that the interior is covered in Blue İznik tiles. The second is: Many years ago, ancient sailors who sailed by the mosque on the Marmara Sea saw the blue colors of the sea reflected in the mosque.

The silhouette is a pleasure to gaze upon from all over Istanbul, but the inside is not a must-see. Interesting if you've never been in a mosque (it is still used as a place of worship) but it will not detain you for long.

Very moving and a wonderful mosque. You can go in only when there are no prayers.

of all the mosque you can see around istanbul, its probably one of the most beautiful inside and out, great view from afar, from a block, to even up close, great architectural design. inside was very colorfully blue due to the blue design wall tiles, that's why it was called the blue mosque., it would have been even more impressive if the blue tiles cover up to the dome. (yeah, I'll make sure to remind the architect the next time he builds one again:)). there is one draw back, since every one needs to take off their shoes...., well at least the carpet is soft.

A great treat for the eyes. If you can, wait for the evening call to prayer at 5pm and experience the atmosphere.

Different from the Haghia Sophia because the Blue Mosque is a working mosque. It gets its name because of the predominance of blue in the ceiling mosaics. There's something rather special about padding about in one's bare feet on lush carpets and one can only be filled with a sense of awe at the wonder of such a construction.
