Topkapi Apartments
Ranked #68 of 1,247 Speciality Lodging in Istanbul
Reviewed 25 February 2012

After touring for over a month by public bus we were relieved to finish part of our trip at the Topkapi Apartments in Istanbul. We had done some considerable research in Australia prior to leaving and all reviews of accommodation we chose based on trip adviser were accurate.

Hamza replied very quickly to emails we sent prior to leaving and the same when we were travelling within Turkey. Communication, as evident in the brochure and contact list adjacent to the free telephone, is a high priority and much appreciated.
All the positive comments and praise for these apartments about the perfect location and comfortable amenities are warranted. It was heavenly returning exhausted after a day's walking or touring to relax in Unit 4 on the top floor.

Having stayed in apartments during the past five years in the U.K., Netherlands, France, Germany, Czech Republic, Italy, Austria, Belgium and Denmark, we loved this place and can't speak highly enough of the warmth and kindness shown by Yusuf and Hamza. We will be returning to Turkey with our grandchildren from Bahrain in a few years and will certainly rebook.

A comment about Noah's Ark Carpet shop run by Hamza, Yusuf and Apo. We purchased three carpets along the way and were pleased with the advice, honesty and assistance we received. The three Sumaks and antique Teke Ensi tent door hanging purchased at Noah's Ark take pride of place in our collection and we are grateful for their guidance. We often called in and had tea with them and spent time admiring the extensive collection, especially of old rugs. If you are interested I can highly recommend magnificent carpets at realistic prices.

Room Tip: Apartment 4 on the top third floor is very quiet and comfortable and access to the rooftop easy.

We were seven girls from Barcelona that stayed at Topkapi for six nights in two rooms. We really liked the place, was confortable and clean, we have everything we need and also the manager it was very friendly, he is always available for any question or problem. It's possible to arrive to Aya Sofia and the Hypodrom in a few minutes, also there are restaurants and supermarkets very near. We hire the transport to hotel and they were punctual, also it is very near (like 20 minutes). If we come back to Istanbul surely we will go to Topkapi Apartments.

We stayed at Topkapi for 5 nights in late November. Our room was on the top floor. For our needs it was perfect . We completely agree with the positive points in the other reviews, but we have to emphasize how much our visit was enhanced by our hosts. They were available at any time for any of our questions, or just to have a cup of tea and relax in their shop. Thanks to Yusef, we had a marvelous time.

My husband and I stayed in the Aya Sofia room for 4 nights over a long weekend. The owners couldn't have been more helpful. They were always quick to respond to emails and sent lots of useful travel information as we were coming from Sabiha Gokcen airport by public transport which is a bit remote. The owners are not usually in the block itself but can be contacted easily on their mobiles or by going up to their carpet shop. The housekeeper is there during the day if you need anything.

The room itself was simply but nicely decorated and spotlessly clean. It was the same price as a smaller room lower down in the block that we had originally booked, but had its own sitting room which the smaller room did not. There was no problem about changing the room. Comfy bed and great shower. We did a little cooking - there was a 4 ring gas hob and fridge but no microwave or oven, but this was fine for our requirements. There was a small supermarket 10-15 minutes walk away and a fruit and veg market outside on Wednesdays, also there is a baker just nearby. The housekeeper came and cleaned the room every other day and changed the sheets, so everything was kept nice and clean. It was very snowy and cold while we were there but there was good heating throughout the flat (unfortunately it meant we didn't check out the roof terrace though!)

The location is very close to the main sights, Sultanahmet Mosque, Grand Bazaar etc, so was perfect for what we wanted. I highly recommend it and would stay there again. A great deal for the price, and the owners are super-helpful.

Room Tip: Pick one of the rooms higher up in the block - we had Aya Sofia and it was great.

Stayed here for 5 nights over the New Year period. We were on the top (3rd) floor, and found the apartment to be simply and pleasantly furnished, comfortable and with a useful kitchen area. Initially, there was a slight smell in the bathroom, which may have originated from some problems mentioned in another reviewers comments regarding a broken toilet. This cleared up after a couple of days. The apartment was also slightly cold for the time of year, we did turn up the radiators, which helped a little. The location is within a few minutes of most of the main sights of the old town (Topkapi, Hagia Sophia, Blue Mosque, etc).

Room Tip: Take a map - can get lost around the surrounding side-streets.

Thank you for your stay at our apartments and your review. We are sorry that you felt chilly during your stay. We hope that you will inform us next time and we would be happy to help adjust the temperature to your comfort level. As for the slight smell, it is not a result of a broken toilet, as the broken toilet mentioned in an earlier review was taken care of immediately. Unfortunately, Istanbul has very old city sewer pipes and occasionally when the wind blows in the wrong direction, a slight smell can come up the pipes. Although it doesn't often happen and we have done our best to deal with this problem by installing new pipes at renovation, all buildings in Istanbul suffer from this situation and we are sorry that you had to experience it during your stay.
