business hotel by the galle road, colombo. Nothing romantic, a big factory hotel with many restaurants. A little bit tired as decoration despite the announced 2 years old renovation. Internet 10 dollars for 24 hours, good connection by cable only inside the room. Nice breakfast buffet. Nice gym. Charm Zero.

We stayed here in an executive room for 2 nights. We wanted to stay in a reasonably priced (from a tourist perspective!), good standard/modern/refurbished, secure, well maintained, clean, large and faceless (we do not like intimate accommodation) hotel. This hotel met our requirements.

Location:

We like walking and are happy to do so whatever the weather; i.e. even in the high heat/humidity. This means that for us, this hotel was well located. Despite very hot days, we were able to walk to everywhere we wanted to explore around Colombo. It is opposite the Ceylon Tourist Board (marginally handy as most of the information they provide can be just as easily gotten from the web and they are not in any event tuned to independent travellers like us, promoting only tours), very close to the sea front (Galle Face Green which is very popular with the locals) - a pleasant way to walk into the Colombo business district where the Fort Railway station is - as well as a small and pretty well maintained lake that you can walk around and hire little boats at (if you are so inclined which we were not). It was also (for us) within easy walking distance to the Cinnamon Gardens area.

We noted that the other similar hotels we'd considered were clustered generally in the vicinity (indeed, handily so for those essential "toilet breaks"). None had a location that we would say was better than any other; each had its own good and bad points. What will no doubt sway the pendulum in favour of this hotel for many is the small shopping centre next door that is mentioned in other reviews that provides additional dining/food/convenience options if needed (we did not need it).

Accommodation:

There are from what we could tell, 2 wings to the hotel. Our room was on the top/executive floor of one of those wings. The rooms in that wing are arranged around a modern refurbished atrium which was however, soulless. It seemed to have no purpose and was often kept dark.

Our executive room was of a good size with a big window looking out over one of the pools and other buildings to the sea. While not a spectacular view, it was cooling to be able to see water. The room/bathroom look to have been relatively recently refurbished and were tastefully decorated, clean and well maintained. The bed was comfortable. Free (wired only as far as we recall) internet was available in the room and free wireless internet was available in the executive lounge. Both worked well. A butler was available to us throughout our stay but we had no reason to call upon him.

Executive Lounge:

It was great having access to the always staffed executive lounge that provided refreshments/nibbles (e.g. cakes) throughout the day (and water) as well as the advertised high tea/evening drinks. This is very welcome in a city where there is not a huge amount to do and it is very hot/humid. It means that you can retreat into the executive lounge for a break/to cool down. It is well positioned too, with large windows overlooking the city and the small lake mentioned above. We were there just before the Vesak festival when the city/lake are adorned with hundreds of lights and the view onto them from the executive lounge was great.

The quantity/quality of the food and drink provided was okay; neither spectacular nor horrific (based on our personal preferences/expectations). It did not compare favourably with that of other executive lounges we have experienced in other countries, but then again, it is unfair to compare such things across countries. The executive lounge was generally much quieter while we were there than many we have visited so it is perhaps not surprising that it does not have the same "spread" that those others do. Ultimately, what it provided was good in context, albeit it was (sadly) mainly western fare. They were however, kind enough to accommodate our requests for things like cashews to accompany our drinks.

The staff were always polite, professional and helpful. The only real "downer" for us was the smoking room in the middle of the executive lounge from which smoke/stale smoke smells leaked.

Food:

Apart from the executive room, we had breakfast (included in our room rate) and dinner in the hotel.

The buffet breakfast compared very favourably to those of other similar classed hotels in Asia. In addition to the usual hot and cold items/variety you would expect, there was a counter at which you could order your made to order eggs etc. The breakfast staff were attentive.

We had dinner at the Lagoon, the seafood restaurant. That was lovely. We were able to choose our seafood from the nicely presented and very fresh array which was then weighed and cooked as you request. We chose Sri Lankan curries and they were really nice. This turned out to be our best and most reasonably priced (for what it was) meal in Sri Lanka. We highly recommend it.

Facilites:

There is a gym (or 2) on site as well as 2 pools and a spa. We used the gym near the spa which was staffed, well stocked, maintained and clean. We did not use the pools or the spa, but they too looked well maintained and clean.

General:

The reception/lobby area is very nice but not as nice as that of the Cinnamon Lake, particularly as the often dark (at least while we were there) atrium is just behind the lobby area/reception. It dampens down the overall ambiance of the area.

That said, this is a well located, clean, well maintained professional hotel. While expensive from a Sri Lankan perspective, everything aimed at/available to tourists in Sri Lanka is, so while it was not locally value for money, from an international travellers perspective it was; that is, we felt that we got enough back from the services provided to make what we paid worth it. We would definitely return to it.

I stayed in that hotel many times, and every time it feels worse, to the stage where I really will look for another hotel in Colombo. The hotel lobby has become more busy like a train station. The staff is not service orientated and started to have an attitude even, when u ask for something. Very bad was the Coffee Stop service, reception and main restaurant. The breakfast seems extensive and generous but lacks creativity. Service very poor and the taste is not even average.
Rooms are fine but overpriced for that kind of hotel management. Housekeeping and roomservice was good.
Also need to mention that the staff at pool bar also need a wake up call. Service extremely poor u need to wait for ages until they come and ask if u want something.
Overall the service attitude of the hotel has become bad and the staff feels laid back.
Over all disappointed and will change my hotel next time in Colombo.

Everything is right about this hotel until I am handed my bill. A quick glance produced a red flag. The rooms were charged out at a figure a few rupees short of 2000 per night. As this seemed excessive I delved into my bag and produced a printout of my booking with ¨bookings.com¨. This showed a total of US$280 for the two nights (less 25% taxes). I pointed this out to Sameera who was serving me, who then went into a long winded explanation of how he had managed to convert US$280 into almost 40000 rupees. My response was that, in that case I would prefer to pay in US dollars, being the currency in which I was quoted. I was told that this was not possible, and that they would only accept rupees. When I began to argue the point, Sanduk was called, who, after careful consideration, conceded that I may pay this portion of my bill in dollars, but only if I had the correct change.
As I had only US$100 notes plus one $20 note in cash, I gave them the option of accepting US$400 in cash, and using the balance towards payment of the room service, or accepting US$320 in cash, and charging out the balance in rupees. Neither of these options were suitable to Sanduk, who reiterated that if he was to accept US dollars, only the correct change would do. Following my further protestations, a woman who was obviously the manager approached to sort out the argument. She told Sameera to go ahead and accept the US$400 in cash, and put the balance towards payment of the room service. Not rocket science! At this point I was starting to relax, thinking everything would now be good, and I had proved my point, but to my horror and amazement I received only a few hundred rupees change from my $US400, before settling the balance of the bill. Again I protested, and again a long winded explanation ensued about how he had arrived at that figure, but I wasn´t listening. I said ¨look, it´s simple. I gave you US$400, and I want US$35 change, or the equivalent in rupees¨. Sameera was getting noticeably agitated at this point, and again it took the manageress to guide the proceedings to an agreeable finish. The change was recalculated and some 4000 rupees produced.
As I didn´t have a calculator handy I was forced to do all the sums in my head. It was only later, whilst driving to Kandy when my head had cleared, did I realize that 25% of $280 was only $70, not the $75 calculated by Sameera. (There are three taxes charged on everything in Sri Lanka, amounting to 25%.)
Apart from the incident on checking out, I loved this hotel. The staff were wonderful, the breakfast buffet was amazing, our room was large and comfortable, everything about this hotel is truly grand.
My only other complaint is that two of the small hand towels were not replaced on the second day, but we didn´t bother to complain.

We ordered from the room service menu a few times, both from the full menu before 11pm, and the snack menu after 11pm, when we ordered hamburgers. We found the quality of food was quite reasonable and surprisingly cheap. We have often paid more in very ordinary restaurants for similar food where the hygein was questionable.

Thank you for choosing to stay at the Cinnamon Grand Colombo, on your travel to Sri Lanka. Thank you also for taking the time to share your feedback on TripAdvisor.

Whilst we are delighted to learn that you enjoyed everything about our hotel, we are extremely sorry that your visit was marred by an unpleasant incident relating to your bill.

At the outset it is pertinent to mention that we are required to abide by certain exchange control regulations imposed by our Central Bank. One such is, although rates are quoted in US Dollars it is taken into account in terms of the Rupee value, at the prevailing rate of conversion during payment. Further we also wish to clarify that the total amount of tax payable was 26.82% and not 25% as you had worked out, hence the $75 charge. We deeply regret the miscommunication on the part of our staff that lead to this unfortunate situation and wish to assure you that such repetitions will not take place in the future.

Nothing is more important to us than regaining your trust and we sincerely hope this incident will not prevent you from staying again at the Cinnamon Grand Colombo, should you visit Sri Lanka in the future.

Thank you

Staying at the Cinnamon Grand is always a pleasure. The rooms are clean and well appointed though perhaps a little dated in terms of furnishings. The one outstanding feature is the sea food restaurant - Lagoon. It's simply superb. Great selection of freshly caught fish, prawns, crab, lobster and everything else.

Ask for a Lobster Thermidor, Sri Lankan Lagoon Crab in spicy Asian sauce and dont forget the oysters!

It's a feast, washed down with a chilled Chardonnay! Enjoy and don't check your weight the day after!
